Weekly Roundup: Williams, nation’s top team, beats women’s tennis 6-3
The women's tennis team closed out the regular season with a loss to No.1 Williams last Saturday, ending with a conference record of 5-3 and a 10-7 overall record. The Polar Bears only suffered three conference losses all season, all to higher-ranked teams. Riding high after its 9-0 shutout against Bates two days earlier, Bowdoin took two out of three doubles sets against the Ephs. The match against Williams marked the debut of Bowdoin's new doubles lineup.

Weekly Roundup: Chaos Theory heading to nationals after taking region
Chaos Theory, the women's ultimate Frisbee team, is advancing to nationals for the first time ever after winning the third-ever New England D-III Women's Regionals last weekend, hosted by Williams. Over the two-day tournament, Chaos Theory went undefeated in seven games, securing one of three bids to the national tournament in Appleton, Wis., on May 19 and 20.

Although Williams ended the men's tennis team's nine-match winning streak—its longest in over a decade—Bowdoin remains one of the top teams in the conference heading into postseason play this weekend. The Polar Bears are now ranked No. 9 in the country after losing a tough 5-4 battle against Williams on Saturday, coming off a definitive 8-1 win against Colby last Friday.

Weekly Roundup: Coed sailing fails to win a race, places last at Fowle
The coed sailing team failed to secure a win at the Fowle Trophy last weekend at MIT, ending 0-8 overall against the top teams in New England. Bowdoin went 0-5 in the qualification round against Tufts, Yale, Brown, Connecticut College, and MIT. Then in the consolation round, the Polar Bears fell to Boston University, the University of Vermont, and Connecticut College. The Polar Bears finished in 12th place.

Weekly Roundup: Men’s tennis keeps rolling, doubles streak at 24 straight
Coming off of six consecutive wins, the men's tennis team secured victories number seven and eight last weekend to give the program its longest winning streak since 2000. The ninth-ranked men beat No. 15 Bates 7-2 on Friday and bested Hamilton 8-1 on Sunday, improving their record to 10-5.

Weekly Roundup: Track teams rise to top as Chick, Silva, Millett are PotW
Bowdoin's track teams came away from their meets this weekend with major hardware. They won 22 events, and had three NESCAC Performer of the Week honorees between them. The men competed at the Maine State Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Colby, while the women hosted the Aloha Relays at home.

Weekly Roundup: Gorajek, Clegg lead women’s lax to 2 victories, No. 5 seed
On Sunday, the women's lacrosse team bested the University of New England (12-4) in a non-conference game with a whopping 21-7 win. Bowdoin (10-5, 6-4 NESCAC) will now play against Amherst in the playoffs tomorrow as the No. 5 seed.

Weekly Roundup: DellaTorre, Dewar, Barlow, Smyth break softball records
The softball team swept Colby 5-0, 7-1 and 8-0 over the weekend, increasing its winning streak to five games overall and six games against conference rivals. The weekend was historic for the team, as Melissa DellaTorre' 14, Caroline Dewar '12, Gen Barlow '13 and Hillary Smyth '12 all broke school records.

Weekly Roundup: Men’s lacrosse loses to Tufts, will play Wesleyan as 3-seed
Men's lacrosse defeated Endicott 8-4 last Sunday and lost to Tufts 15-7 on Wednesday, bringing the team's overall record to 11-4. This is the first time since 2008 that the Polar Bears have won 11 games, and concludes a 5-0 out-of-conference record.

Weekly Roundup: Martin sets triple jump mark as track teams place high
Facing D-I competitors, the track and field teams posted impressive results at the University of New Hampshire Wildcat Invitational last weekend. Chris Martin '12 was a double winner, claiming first place in both the long jump and the triple jump. He set a new school record in the latter with a jump of 14.54 meters, besting the existing record by .13 meters.

Weekly Roundup: Baseball hands Trinity first defeat before losing 3 games
After dealing rival Trinity its only loss in 12 games on Friday, the baseball team lost both games in Saturday's doubleheader and Tuesday's non-conference game against Husson. Bowdoin (15-11, 3-3 NESCAC) maintained second place in the NESCAC East division while allowing Trinity to clinch a spot in next month's playoffs.

Weekly Roundup: Coed sailing finishes 14th, women prep for Reed Trophy
The coed and women's sailing teams hit the road this weekend, traveling to Harvard and the Coast Guard Academy, respectively. The coed team took 14th in the New England Championship regatta, which Coach Frank Pizzo said was a learning experience filled with "trying moments." Pizzo said he believed part of the challenge was the depth of the competition.

The women's tennis team fell to fifth in the conference after losing to undefeated Middlebury last Saturday. Bowdoin (7-5, 3-1 NESCAC) lost 8-1 to a talented Panther squad ranked No. 7 in the nation. The Polar Bears rebounded with a 8-1 victory over Tufts yesterday.

Weekly Roundup: Women’s lacrosse defeats Endicott after loss to Trinity
The women's lacrosse team lost to undefeated Trinity 13-6 before fighting to an 18-12 win against Endicott last week. The Polar Bears were unable to recover from an early 5-0 deficit in the Trinity game, which ultimately cost them the match. The Bantams' victory avenged their only loss in the past two seasons, which came at the hands of Bowdoin in last year's NCAA quarterfinals.

Weekly Roundup: DellaTorre, Thibodeau pitch softball to sweep over USM
The softball team swept the University of Southern Maine in a doubleheader on Wednesday, winning 16-4 and 4-0. The team increased its winning streak to four games and brought its overall record to 17-8. "We've played well recently," said Head Coach Ryan Sullivan. After "an eight-day break, it was nice to play on Wednesday and get two wins."

Weekly Roundup: Sailing improves, Schwitzer, Okawa take division A gold
The women's sailing team climbed to a program-best No. 11 national ranking after a strong third-place finish at Boston University's President's Trophy. The boat of Kaylee Schwitzer '15 and Ayaka Okawa '14 led the way for Bowdoin, winning the 13-team A division ahead of Yale and Brown for the sailors' first divisional victory. Schwitzer and Okawa were named the NEISA Women's Sailors of the Week following their accomplishment.

After an 8-1 win over Tufts last Friday, the men's tennis team's match against Bates was rained out on Tuesday. Chris Lord '14, Casey Grindon '13, Noah Bragg '15, Kyle Wolstencroft '15, and Doug Caplan '15 won singles matches against the Jumbos.

Weekly Roundup: Men’s lacrosse overpowers Clark 16-3, falls to Bantams
The men's lacrosse team demolished Clark University on Wednesday after falling to Trinity, the top NESCAC team, on Saturday. Ten players scored in Bowdoin's 16-3 victory over Clark. Billy Bergner '13 and Lawton Salley '12 led the team with three goals apiece.

Weekly Roundup: Busy day in Conn. proves no problem for men’s tennis
Playing two matches in one day did not daunt the men's tennis team, as the Polar Bears beat Wesleyan and Trinity by a combined score of 15-1 last Saturday. Bowdoin (5-5, 2-1 NESCAC) is in the midst of a three-match winning streak, and has returned with a vengeance from its spring training trip to California, in which it faced multiple top-20 teams.

Weekly Roundup: Curling earns silver in East Coast D-II championship
The club curling team placed second in Division II of the East Coast Regional College Curling Championship held at the Broomstones Curling Club in Wayland, Mass., last weekend, completing this winter's season. Led by captain Carl Spielvogel '13, the lineup for regionals also included juniors Andrew Hancock, Jay Tulchin and Jimena Escudero.

Weekly Roundup: Club volleyball qualifies for playoffs, ends best year ever
The men's club volleyball team concluded its season last weekend with its best finish ever. Bowdoin made it to the second day of competition at the New England Division II championship at the University of New Hampshire before losing to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), the eventual winners, in straight sets (25-20, 25-20).

The baseball team split a doubleheader against Wesleyan last Saturday to bring its season record to 11-7. With a total of four runs scored overall between the two games, the pitchers battled to control the tempo and keep the opposing offenses off the board.

Weekly Roundup: Lavertu, Lewis post five wins each on women’s tennis trip
The women's tennis team faced a slew of nationally-ranked opponents in California over spring break, returning to the East Coast with a 4-3 record. The team, ranked 15th nationwide, won handily against UC-Santa Cruz, Washington University in St. Louis, Sewanee, and Chapman University, all top-30 teams. Its three losses were to No. 8 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, No. 9 Pomona and D-I Cal-State Northridge.

The men's tennis team closed out a California trip with a 9-0 shutout victory over Salisbury last Wednesday. Bowdoin, ranked No. 14 in D-III, is now moving into conference action and will play Wesleyan and Trinity tomorrow. Against Salisbury, doubles teams of Sam King '14/Oscar Pena '12, Kent Winingham '12/Noah Bragg '15 and Alex Jacobs '12/Peter Davis '14 all claimed victories.

Weekly Roundup: Track kicks off spring season in Calif. with five victories
In its first meet of the outdoor season, the track team put on a show at the non-scoring Santa Barbara Easter Relays in California. For the women, Michele Kaufman '13 won the 100-meter hurdles (15.76) and Katherine Harmon '14 came in first in the hammer throw (43.51 meters).

Weekly Roundup: Sailors ready for upcoming regattas after early success
Three weeks into its spring season, the sailing team is looking like a national-caliber squad. The Polar Bears finished 10th at the Navy Women's Regatta, featuring 20 of the nation's most competitive teams, on March 10. Kaylee Schwitzer '15 sailed with Ayaka Okawa '14, Emily McNeil '14, and Isabel Low '13 to take second place in the B division.

The women's squash finished 20th in the nation at the College Squash Association Team National Tournament at Harvard last weekend. It was a weekend of rematches, as Bowdoin faced three teams that it had defeated in the regular season.

Weekly Roundup: Millett, Horowitz shine for track at Open New Englands
Although the men's and women's track teams did not send many athletes to the Open New England Championships last weekend at Boston University, those who competed posted high finishes against their regional opponents. Captain Elsa Millett '12 finished third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.82 while Olivia MacKenzie '13 earned a third-place finish in the 5000 meters with a time of 17:40.88. Anna Ackerman '12 earned an eighth-place finish in the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:12.93. Annie Huyler '12 placed seventh in the heptathlon with 3,219 points.

Weekly Roundup: Eusden leads Nordic skiing to 10th place at championships
The Nordic ski team completed its season at the Eastern Intercollegiate Skiing Association Championships much in much the same way it has performed all season: near the bottom of the pack, finishing 10th out of 13 teams. Head Coach Nathan Alsobrook said that the carnival was "as much an odyssey as it was a ski race. The sky was dumping snow all through the race and the wind was howling," which led to "very slow and sloppy conditions."

Weekly Roundup: Men’s hockey beats Trinity, Conn. College before playoffs
After winning the last two games of its regular season on the road, the men's ice hockey team will play in the NESCAC Quarterfinals tomorrow against No. 7 seeded Trinity. The Polar Bears (15-5-3, 12-3-3 NESCAC) handled No. 4 Tufts on Friday 9-2, and then held on to beat Connecticut College 6-4 the following day. Bowdoin is now 12-2-2 in its last 16 games.

The Nordic ski team moved up in the standings last weekend at the Williams Carnival, coming in 10th out of 13 teams. Because of sparse snow cover, a relay race scheduled for Saturday was cancelled and replaced by a distance race.

Weekly Roundup: Loss, tie to Amherst gives women’s hockey No. 3 seed
In the last weekend of the regular season, the women's ice hockey team put up a fight against No. 2 seed Amherst (19-4-1, 13-2-1 NESCAC), but settled for a loss and a tie. The No. 3 seeded Polar Bears (11-9-4, 9-6-1 NESCAC) jumped out to an early lead in Friday's game after taking advantage of an Amherst turnover in the neutral zone, which allowed Kim Tess-Wanat '13 to slap the puck into the goal.

The men's squash team wrapped up its season with a trio of games in the College Squash Association team championship this past weekend. Bowdoin beat Connecticut College 6-3 on Friday, lost to George Washington 5-4 on Saturday, and pummeled Hamilton 8-1 on Sunday. The Polar Bears played in the Summers Cup Division, and ended the season ranked No. 19 in the nation.

With a final score of 218.5, Bowdoin more than doubled the points of second-place Springfield, who earned only 99.

The women's basketball team had an up and down week, losing by 15 points to Colby before beating Husson by 35 and Bates by six. Bowdoin's offense stagnated against Colby last Saturday, as every shot seemed to miss and the team made less than 30 percent of its attempts from the floor in a 56-41 loss.

After extending its winning streak against Colby to five games last Friday, the women's hockey team's lost to the Mules in a 2-1 game the following day. Kim Tess-Wanat '13 gave Bowdoin a 1-0 lead in the first period, which the Polar Bears held onto until the final six minutes of regulation time.

Weekly Roundup: Takesian shines for men’s squash as team finishes 1-2
After dropping its first two matches this weekend, the men's squash team ended its weekend at the Trinity Round Robin with a win. The road trip left the Polar Bear's overall season record at 3-3, ranking No. 18 nationally. The competition began on Friday night when Bowdoin fell 8-1 to George Washington (GW) in their first meeting since the College Squash Association Nationals last year.

The women's squash team picked up two wins during a road trip to the Trinity Round Robin last weekend, finishing its fall slate with a record of 3-2. The women's team is currently ranked No. 20 in the nation. The team began play on Friday night, losing its first match to George Washington (GW) 8-1 before rebounding to take both its matches on Saturday.

In an intrastate matchup against Maine Maritime Academy on Monday, the men's basketball team put on a show and won by a final score of 72-44. Bowdoin opened the game with a 15-0 run and never looked back, finishing the first half with a 25-point lead.

Rarely is a loss by a 150-point margin considered a job well done. But for the women's swimming and diving team, the first meet of the season on November 19 proved to be just that. The Polar Bears fell to national powerhouse MIT 212-87, but prevailed over Babson 224-71.

Despite being trounced 222-76 by the MIT Engineers in its first meet of the year two weeks ago, the men's swimming and diving team still managed to walk away with a victory after toppling Babson 197-99 the same day. MIT is the strongest team in New England and is projected to be among the nation's top three teams this season, so Bowdoin's Head Coach Brad Burnham said he was not fazed by the loss.

The men's and women's cross country teams ended their seasons successfully at the NCAA D-III championship in Winneconne, Wis. on November 19. Coby Horowitz '14 earned All-American status by coming in 13th place overall with a time of 24:30 on the 8K course.

The field hockey team's quest to make history by winning four national championships in five years quickly evaporated when Bowdoin lost to Middlebury in the D-III semifinals on November 19. Though the Polar Bears beat the Panthers just two weeks before in the NESCAC championship, Bowdoin was dealt its first and only loss of the season with a score of 3-0.

The football team ended its season on a high note last weekend with a 20-10 victory over Colby. Even though the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin (CBB) Championship technically ended in a tie, in which each team had one win and one loss, the Polar Bears will retain the CBB trophy because they won the title last year.

As a finishing touch to a successful fall season, the men's ultimate Frisbee team, Stoned Clown, placed third at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) Fall Classic last Saturday. The event drew teams from D-I and D-III schools including Harvard, Amherst and MIT. The team posted an impressive 5-1 record in pool play, with the lone loss against eventual champion UNH in an 11-9 battle.

Two disappointing losses in the Northeast Region Championship marked the completion of the women's rugby fall season last weekend. Bowdoin became the sole squad of four competing teams to not qualify for nationals in the spring. Though the Polar Bears controlled possession early on against the Norwich Cadets on Saturday, they were held scoreless for the first and only time this season.

The football team's chances at winning a Colby-Bates-Bowdoin (CBB) title disappeared last Saturday with a 24-2 loss to Bates. After averaging nearly 18 points per game in the first half of the season, the Polar Bears' offense has scored only 14 total points in the three games since then.

The club water polo team placed second in the nation last weekend at the D-III Club Championship at Hamilton College, ending its season with a 12-2 record, the best in its history. After losing the divisional championship to Amherst, Bowdoin was awarded the national championship bid because the Lord Jeffs relinquished their spot.

In its second round playoff game against the University of Rhode Island (URI) last weekend, the women's rugby team suffered its first loss of the season. URI drew first blood, but Bowdoin quickly regained momentum when captain Katie Mathews '12 found center Randi London '15 for a 50-meter try and conversion.

Weekly Roundup: Volleyball to host NESCAC tournament after No. 1 finish
For the first time in program history, the women's volleyball team has secured both the NESCAC No. 1 seed and home court advantage in the conference tournament. Thanks to a pair of victories over Wesleyan and Trinity last weekend, the Polar Bears' season record stands at 23-2 overall and 10-0 in the NESCAC. This is a new school record, surpassing the 22-win mark of the 1988 team. It also marks the first time that a NESCAC team has gone undefeated in the conference since Tufts did so in 2008.

At last weekend's NESCAC Championship, the men's cross country team had its best finish in five years. Seeded fifth, Bowdoin ran to a second-place tie, its best result in the meet since 2006. Behind Williams' score of 49 points, Bowdoin matched Bates with 79 points. The Polar Bears are currently ranked No. 33 in D-III.

Weekly Roundup: Quarterfinal victory leads field hockey into semifinals
The women's field hockey team continued its undefeated season with a 2-0 shutout over Hamilton last Saturday in the NESCAC quarterfinals. With seniors McKenna Teague and Elizabeth Clegg finding the net in the first half, the team held onto its lead for 50 minutes. It was the team's eighth shutout in 15 games.

Weekly Roundup: MacKenzie finishes ninth, women’s XC sixth in NESCAC
At last weekend's NESCAC Championship, junior Olivia MacKenzie's ninth-place finish helped the women's cross country team take sixth overall. She finished the 6K race in 23:07, only a minute behind winner Chiara Del Piccolo of Williams, and was named to the All-NESCAC Second Team.

Weekly Roundup: Field hockey finishes regular season undefeated at 14-0
With a late 1-0 victory over No. 16 Trinity last Saturday, the undefeated field hockey team (14-0) clinched its first NESCAC tournament No. 1 seed since 2007. The team outscored its opponents 48-9 over the course of the season. The winning goal was scored by captain Ella Curren '12 late in the second half, and earned her NESCAC Player of the Week honors.

For the second year in a row, Coby Horowitz '14 took home the gold in the Maine State Championship. On October 1, Bowdoin traveled to Connecticut College for one such stalemate battle. Captain Ellery Gould '12 tied the Bowdoin scoring record when she tied up the game in regulation—though the Polar Bears eventually lost to the Camels 2-1.

When last weekend's field hockey games got close, the crowd looked to one player: Cathleen Smith '13. Smith helped Bowdoin to victories against Middlebury and Williams, as well as to the No. 2 ranking in the country this week. "As a team we've been improving every single game with our connections across the field," said Smith, who was named NESCAC Player of the Week on Monday. "Our goal is to keep improving in every practice and every game."

Coming off impressive singles play at the Stony Brook Invitational in early September, the men's tennis team kept the ball rolling at Williams last weekend. At the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championship, unseeded singles players led the way for Bowdoin. After outscoring opponents 127-0 over its first four games, the women's rugby team gave up its first points of the season in a 22-7 win at Colby. Bowdoin opened the scoring after about 15 minutes of play when a series of pick-and-goes by juniors Dani McAvoy and Uche Esonu fed captain Katie Mathews '12 for the try. Colby responded on the ensuing possession with a long run to tie the game.

Weekly Roundup: Women’s tennis begins year at Eastern Championship
As the only D-III school in a field of D-I and D-II teams, the women's tennis team posted good results and picked up several wins at the Eastern Championship last weekend, held at West Point. The doubles team of Chantalle Lavertu '13 and Emma Lewis '14 reached the semifinals in the A-Division doubles bracket. They defeated Seton Hall, 8-3, and Army, 8-5, but lost 8-6 to the second-seeded Quinnipiac. Emma Chow '15 and captain Hannah Hoerner '12 advanced to the second round of their B-Division doubles bracket.

At last weekend's Williams Invitational, the men's golf team finished eighth out of 18 teams. "We had our best showing in many years at the Williams Invitational, which has the strongest field of teams we see each year," wrote Head Coach Tomas Fortson in an email to the Orient.

Weekly Roundup: Men’s soccer goes winless in its two weekend matches
Last weekend was a disappointing one for men's soccer. The team is now 3-2-1 after tying last year's NESCAC champion Middlebury and losing to Williams. Saturday's game against Middlebury was a constant battle from the get-go. Just two minutes in, defenseman Macgill Eldredge '12 fired a long pass to Nick Powell '12, who gave Bowdoin an early lead with a diving header into the goal.

The women's soccer team earned its second victory of the season last Saturday by outscoring Brandeis 2-1 at home. Despite a slow start in which Brandeis took seven of the game's first eight shots, the Polar Bears went on the offensive midway through the second half, scoring twice in under 10 minutes.

Last weekend at the Maine State Golf Championship, the men's golf team had its best match of the young season. The Polar Bears finished second in the 11-team field, bested only by Husson University, which has now won all three of its tournaments this year. Bowdoin had a two-day score of 636 compared to Husson's 600, and finished ahead of NESCAC rivals Bates (fifth, 652) and Colby (tied for sixth, 657).

In typical fashion, the women's field hockey team once again proved its excellence in a game against University of Southern Maine on Tuesday evening. Bowdoin, ranked number four in the country, quickly fell behind despite its early domination in the game, when the Huskies scored their first goal against the Polar Bears since 2003.

Weekly Roundup: Fast times for cross country teams at Maine Invitational
Coby Horowitz '14 and Olivia MacKenzie '13 led the cross country teams to third- and fourth-place finishes at the inaugural Maine Cross Country Invitational last weekend. The teams began their seasons on Saturday at Pickard Field, as both squads were eager for their home opener. Horowitz was Bowdoin's fastest male finisher in the 8K course, with a time of 25:33.19, good for seventh overall. Sophomores Sam Seekins and Nick Saba finished 10th and 11th, respectively, with captain Matt Hillard '12 just behind Saba. Fellow captain Colin Ogilvie '12, James Boeding '14 and Greg Talpey '14 rounded out Bowdoin's top seven.

The men's cross country team kicks off its season at home tomorrow at the Maine Invitational meet, the first test of whether the team's strong returning lineup will be enough to push it ahead in the rankings. This year's team is composed largely of experienced runners who hope to improve upon last year's performance. The team earned sixth place at the NESCAC cross country championship last fall in addition to its seventh-place finish at the NCAA New England championships.
