Search Committee publishes presidential position specification

September 2, 2022

Last Friday, the Presidential Search Committee published a position specification document for Bowdoin’s 16th president. In an email to the campus community, committee co-chairs Sydney Asbury ’03 and Bertrand Garcia-Moreno ’81 P’17 wrote that the committee has met with faculty, staff, students, parents, trustees and alumni since its formation in May, and the document it has produced will introduce both the College and the position of president to prospective candidates.

The document begins with a description of the College itself, outlining Bowdoin’s history, values, location, faculty and students. It also includes a section titled “Bowdoin Today,” which details the College’s culture, endowment and commitments to affordability and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).

The remainder of the position description addresses Bowdoin’s future and the responsibilities of its next president. According to the document, Bowdoin’s next president will be responsible for advancing interdisciplinary cooperation, recruiting faculty, and furthering the College’s financial aid and DEI programs, among other tasks.

The search committee hopes to appoint the next president by June 2023 with the assistance of search firm Spencer Stuart.
