In the first round of the New England Rugby Football Union (NERFU) D-II playoffs last weekend, Bowdoin dismantled the University of New Hampshire (UNH) by a score of 44-5.

"We played smart and we played together," said Head Coach MaryBeth Mathews. "Our defense was better than it has been."

The Polar Bears took a 22-0 lead into halftime after scores from captain Katie Mathews '12, Dani McAvoy '13, Randi London '15, and Anissa Tanksley '14, but faced a physical challenge from UNH.

"Their forward pack was the best Bowdoin has faced all year," said MaryBeth Mathews. "But we exploited their weaknesses in the back line and Katie Mathews orchestrated some beautiful plays."

Kerry Townsend '13 and London found tries from Emily Athanas-Linden '15 in the second half. Helen White '13 scored, and Townsend finished the scoring off an assist from Maura Allen '14.

"I think everyone walked off the field feeling very good about how we played as a team," said Katie Mathews.

The undefeated team hosts the NERFU Championship tournament this weekend, playing its semifinal game against the University of Rhode Island tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. Bowdoin (9-0) will secure a home game in the next round with a win.

"I think it will be a very tough game," said MaryBeth Mathews. "They have a good halfback and center and a good pack of forwards."

"They're an athletic team," said Katie Mathews. "I think we're very similar teams, so there are not too many special things we're going to have to do."
