BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM

Women’s soccer went 3-0 last week against Bates College, the University of Maine-Farmington (UMF) and the University of New England (UNE). The Polar Bears defeated Bates 2-1, the UMF 8-0 and the UNE 1-0. Bowdoin also outshot all three opponents. Forward Morgan Smiley ’24 earned her fifth goal of the season against the UNE, making her the first Bowdoin player to score a goal in four consecutive games since 2013. Forwards Samaya Bernardo ’24 and Lo Hoglin ’24 each scored two goals against the UMF. The Polar Bears will return to NESCAC action this Saturday at Connecticut College.

ABOVE PAR

Last weekend, the men’s golf team came in sixth place at Middlebury’s Duke Nelson Invitational, which saw 24 of the region’s best teams competing against each other. It was the Polar Bears’ best-ever finish in the tournament and an improvement from last year’s 15th place showing. The team finished the two-day tournament with a total of 601 (305-296). George Fahey ’26 earned fourth place in the tournament individually, with a 75-69-144, and Liam Jachetta ’24 finished with a 77-74-151 to take 22nd place. Bowdoin will compete this weekend at the Williams Fall Invitational.

PITCHING IN

Last Friday, the women’s rugby team defeated the UNE 31-7 in its season opener. The game was a rematch of last year’s national championship. The Polar Bears had a strong start, scoring the first 24 points of the match. Flanker Saniya Ridley scored less than a minute into the match and again the thirteenth minute. Hooker Jorja Markella ’24, eight man Rebecca Vakarau ’25 and lock Maggie Norton ’24 also added tries. Fullback Lauryn Eisenhart ’24 had three successful conversion kicks. Bowdoin will play a double-header against Colby College and Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday afternoon at Pickard Field.
