Class of 2024 convening events postponed after move to Yellow Status

September 10, 2021

Due to the College’s transition to Yellow Status, the Class of 2024 Convening Brunch, President’s Welcome and Class Photo—which were planned for Sunday, September 5—have been postponed until further notice.

These three events traditionally take place when a new class arrives on campus each fall. However, COVID-19 restrictions in place during the fall 2020 semester required the Class of 2024 to wait for over a year to partake in these traditions.

“Coming from a remote year, I was looking forward to an orientation-like event to get to know my class,” Lionel Welz ’24 said. “I was hoping for an opportunity to really meet as a group.”

“I’m disappointed because it was a time for a fragmented class to come together and try to make up for lost time,” Francesca Kusserow ’24 added.

Silvia Lorrain, Associate Director of Student Activities and a planner and coordinator of these events, shared the Class of 2024’s disappointment about the cancellations.

“I know that the Class of 2024 were super excited to be able to have the usual tradition, and we were excited to be able to provide that for them. It’s a total bummer,” Lorrain said. “None of us planned on starting the year this way.”

Lorrain encouraged members of the Class of 2024 to take advantage of other class-specific opportunities—such as the sophomores-only McKeen Center event this afternoon and the Bowdoin Student Government information sessions this weekend—while they wait for another brunch to be scheduled.

“The plan is to reschedule, hopefully, when the campus is back in Green and when we’re at a good level, we can have the event again on a good date for everyone,” Lorrain said. “Hopefully that happens soon.”
