Highlight Reel for October 2

THREE-GOAL-THIRD

The field hockey team (5–2; 3–2 NESCAC) broke out in the second half of their game against the University of Southern Maine (6–4) on Tuesday, propelling the Polar Bears to a 4–0 win. Although the scoring didn’t start until the third quarter, the team controlled the pace of the game throughout the first half and put on a defensive clinic. Emily Ferguson ’27 scored the first goal of the game in the 33rd minute with a shot from the left side of the circle. Three minutes later, Hannah Balmelli ’28 made it 2–0, quickly followed by Ferguson scoring her second goal of the match. Charlotte Crawford ’28 rounded out the scoring in the fourth quarter, while the Polar Bears defense cemented the shutout. Next up, the team will travel to Thomas College (3–8) tomorrow for a 1 p.m. game.

STRONG STROKES

In a dominant performance at the men’s golf team’s home invitational this past weekend, the team placed fourth out of 16 teams. The Polar Bears shot rounds of 297, 298 and 298 for a 54-hole total of 893, only five strokes behind Tufts University. Leading the Polars Bears, Kaiden Hong ’29 tied for fourth individually at 217 (70–74–73). His 70-shot opener was the Polar Bears’ lowest round of the tournament. Other golfers posting strong outings were Andrew Flynn ’27 at 220 (74–74–72) and Gavin Russell ’30 at 222 (75-71-76). The Polar Bears will close out their fall season October 10–11 at the Skidmore Invitational in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

TERRIFIC TENNIS

Two players for the men’s tennis team took the chance to shine at the ITA New England Regional this past weekend. Simon Catanzaro ’29 reached the A singles semifinals. Catanzaro was seeded 9–16 and won four matches to advance. In the quarterfinals, he beat Hunter Liao of MIT 4–6, 6–4, 6–3. Catanzaro lost to No. 2 seed Garv Bahl of Tufts University, 7–5, 3–6, 6–2. In a statement upset, Cameron Zia ’28 defeated No.1 seed Andreas Sillaste of Amherst College in the round of 16, 6–4, 6–2. Zia’s run ended against Noah Lewis of Middlebury College. The duo also competed up until the quarterfinals in doubles. The men’s tennis team will conclude its fall campaign at the Skidmore Invitational on October 10–11.
