LEAGUE LEADERS

This week, two Bowdoin student-athletes, Hannah Balmelli ’28 and Alison Smith ’28, were named NESCAC Field Hockey Player of the Week and NESCAC Volleyball Co-Player of the Week respectively. Balmelli scored two game-winning goals for field hockey (4–1; 3–1 NESCAC), leading to victories against two top-ten teams this past weekend at Ryan Field. On Saturday, Balmelli converted in a flurry in front of the net with 3:46 left on the clock, giving Bowdoin a 2–1 win over No. 5 Wesleyan University (3–2; 0–2 NESCAC). The next day, Balmelli scored the lone goal of the game to kick off the second half, leading to the Polar Bears’ 1–0 victory against tenth-ranked Williams College (6–1; 3–1 NESCAC). In an undefeated, 4–0 week for volleyball (8–3; 2–0 NESCAC), Smith averaged 3.50 kills per game with a .318 hitting percentage. Smith had 23 kills in a comeback five-set victory at Connecticut College (3–6; 0–2 NESCAC) on Friday, and posted an additional 14 kills in a reverse sweep of UMass Boston (7–5) on Saturday.

ROAD WIN

Bowdoin women’s soccer (4–3; 1–3 NESCAC) snapped a two-game losing streak with a strong 4–1 win over Emerson College on Wednesday. The Polar Bears scored two goals in each half, their domination beginning in the 13th minute as Mary Rainey ’27 set Kayley Huleatt ’28 up for her second goal of the season. Though Emerson evened the score just over six minutes later, the Polar Bears retook the lead on an Emerson own-goal heading into the half. At 55:11, Huleatt assisted Jackie Shores ’28 for her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Twenty minutes later, Rainey scored on a pass from Kendall Hacker ’29 to cap off the scoring. Bowdoin will face off against Middlebury College on Saturday at Pickard Field.

STRONG SAILING

The Bowdoin sailing team had another busy weekend, featuring a tournament win and other exceptional showings. The Polar Bears won the Barnett Trophy out on home waters, with boats placing first and fifth among the 18 competing teams. The first team included Noah Reischmann ’29 and Yasmine Nee ’29 in the A Division, and Shea McGrath ’27 and Maizie Bartlett ’27 represented Bowdoin in the B Division. McGrath and Bartlett won the B Division by 14 points and solidified Bowdoin as the number one team. Bowdoin’s second team, finishing fifth, was led by Cole Amaral ’28 and Ela Murat ’30 in the A Division, while Charlie Conover ’29 and Clio Foley ’30 sailed in the B Division. In the women’s singlehand at Boston College, Rebecca Schill ’27 turned in a strong performance and finished fourth overall. Schill now awaits selections for the Women’s Singlehanded National Championship.
