Last weekend, the men’s tennis team (15–4; 8–2 NESCAC) placed second in the NESCAC Championship. The Polar Bears swept Bates College (7–9; 4–6 NESCAC) on Friday by a final score of 5–0 and won their game on Saturday against Williams College (14–4; 8–2 NESCAC) 5–2.

Last weekend, the men’s and women’s track and field teams took second and third place, respectively, at the Pine Tree State Classic. On the men’s team, Ajay Olson ’23 placed first in the 100m and Lars Sorom ’26 won the 400m.

The women’s tennis team (2–7; 2–3 NESCAC) defeated Bates College (4–10; 0–8 NESCAC) 9–0 on Tuesday afternoon at home. The Polar Bears swept Bates in doubles play with victories from Jamilah Karah ’25 and Cara Hung ’26 (8–3), Kennedi Carter ’23 and Hannah Buckhout ’24 (8–6), and Elizabeth Yu ’24 and Candice Ballarin ’25 (8–2).
The men’s tennis team (7–1; 2–0 NESCAC) returned from its annual trip to California with a strong showing against national competition as they look toward NESCAC play.
While several matches had to be canceled due to weather, the Polar Bears, ranked 12th nationally, started their trip with four consecutive victories against Chapman University (5–7), Rhodes College (6–5), University of the Redlands (6–5), and Pomona-Pitzer (7–10).
MEN’S LACROSSE
2022 record: 18–3 (9–1 NESCAC)
The men’s lacrosse team enters 2023 with high expectations after its most successful season in recent history last year. Bowdoin advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament and fell to the Rochester Institute of Technology, the eventual national champions.
From September 30 to October 2, Bowdoin hosted the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England Regional Championship. Players Reid Staples ’24 and Tristan Bradley ’23 advanced to the finals and played each other. Bradley was crowned as champion and qualified for the ITA Cup, which is being hosted by Berry College in Rome, Ga.
This Saturday, the men’s tennis team will make the journey to Williams College to take part in the NCAA Division III Tournament. After a tough loss to Amherst College in the NESCAC Tournament last weekend, the team was unsure they would be competing, but their overall record proved them worthy of an at-large NCAA bid.
After defeating Trinity 7-2, Connecticut College 9-0 and University of Southern Maine 9-0 this past weekend, the men’s tennis team improved to 12-1 overall following their ninth win in a row. The team is having an impressive season with an end goal of making it to the NESCAC Championships in May.
WAVED ON HOME
When much of the College traveled home for spring break, the baseball team returned to Florida for spring training for the first time since the start of the pandemic. Over break, the team was able to make up for lost seasons as they played 11 games in their stint away from campus.
This past weekend, the men’s tennis team came back strong at the Division III International Tennis Association (ITA) tournament after two years without formal competition. For the first time in two decades, Bowdoin hosted the tournament, which gave the majority of the team its first chance to compete in collegiate-level matches.

After an impressive 2018-2019 campaign, the men’s varsity tennis team entered its fall season facing serious personnel question marks after graduating key seniors. Even so, the team has recorded promising results in each of its first two fall tournaments.
After picking up two more NESCAC wins last weekend, the third-ranked men’s tennis team (15-3, 7-2 NESCAC) is heading to Middlebury today to kick off the NESCAC Championship against Williams (8-7, NESCAC 5-3).
As the Polar Bears prepare for tournament play, captain Grant Urken ’19 said the championship is more of a race than the regular season, changing the team’s mentality.
After returning to New England from spring training in California with new players and skills, the fifth-ranked men’s tennis team (8-1, 2-0 NESCAC) defeated the seventh-ranked Wesleyan Cardinals (9-2, 2-1 NESCAC) 6-3 last weekend.
In California, the Polar Bears were able to compete against strong teams while solidifying their dynamics and individual roles, ultimately finishing with a 7-1 record and their first NESCAC win of the year against Trinity.
Last weekend, Jerry Jiang ’19 and Justin Wang ’21 finished second place at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Cup Doubles Championship in Rome, Georgia. They got a ticket to the tournament after winning the ITA New England regionals in late September.
In the 2017-18 season, the men’s tennis team ranked third in the nation and placed second at the NCAA championship. This year, the team’s roster gained two first years but graduated three standout players. Nonetheless, captains Jerry Jiang ’19 and Grant Urken ’19 are enthusiastic about their prospects for the upcoming year.

The baseball team (11-12, 3-3 NESCAC) is currently on a five-game win streak after sweeping its weekend series against Trinity (13-12, 3-6 NESCAC) and beating Thomas (3-25) 11-4 on Monday. Brandon Lopez ’20 was named NESCAC Pitcher of the Week this week after tossing a full game against Trinity last Friday.

Last year, the Polar Bears played the Panthers three times and lost in both the regular season and the NESCAC championships. However, Bowdoin evened the score in the NCAA DIII championship, winning 5-0 to claim its first national title.
