Highlight Reel for October 16

October 16, 2026

RECORD-SETTING WIN

On Wednesday, Bowdoin men’s soccer (6–1–4; 3–1–2 NESCAC) was victorious against Husson University (4–5–2), winning 3–1 and claiming the 120th win for Head Coach Scott Wiercinski. This victory ties him with former Head Coach Charlie Butt as the winningest head coach in Bowdoin men’s soccer history. The game itself was a scoring frenzy; less than six minutes into the contest, the Polar Bears were up 2–0 thanks to quick goals from Donovan Sinicropi ’29 and Patrick Brady ’30—both with assists from Jack Banks ’27. In the second half, both teams scored once, with Bowdoin’s Alden Mehta ’27 netting his first goal since 2023. All in all, the Polar Bears made twice as many shots (18–9) and maintained a 9–3 edge in shots on goal. Head Coach Scott Wiercinski looks to set a new record this weekend at home versus Hamilton College (4–4–4; 1–4–3 NESCAC) tomorrow at 12 p.m.

SHUTOUT

In a nationally-ranked clash, No. 9 Bowdoin field hockey (9–2; 4–2 NESCAC) beat No. 12 Babson field hockey (8–5) 1–0. The game came down to a clutch third quarter goal scored by Katie Athanasoulas ’28 after she rebounded a barely-missed shot by Hannah Balmelli ’28. Throughout the game, Bowdoin’s defense held strong in spite of the aggressive Babson offense and rainy conditions. The shutout victory was Bowdoin field hockey’s first time beating the Babson Beavers since 2010, as the teams did not meet between 2011 and 2023. Tomorrow at 11 a.m., the Polar Bears will take on Hamilton College (10–2; 5–2 NESCAC) at home.

FRIDAY NIGHT TRIUMPH

Bowdoin women’s rugby (2–2) beat the University of New England (UNE) (2–1) last Friday in an away-game victory. First-year Liv Groth ’30 kept up her momentum from weeks prior with an early-game try. UNE stormed back with a try and conversion, putting the Nor’easters up 7–5. Just minutes later, Amanda Korfin ’29 retook the lead for the Polar Bears, and towards the end of the match, Groth scored her second try of the night to bump the final score to 15–7. Women’s rugby will get back at it on Oct. 24 at 10 a.m. in Lewiston, N.Y. versus Davenport University (3–2).
