BSG discusses end-of-year funding and looks to next year’s budget

On Wednesday evening, Bowdoin Student Government (BSG) assembled in Daggett Lounge to discuss allocating its remaining funds.
BSG President Alex Kruse ’26 opened the meeting by congratulating the winners of the executive board and class council elections, the results of which were announced on Monday. Kruse noted that the election process will continue in the fall for vacant positions.
Chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee Claire Shim ’28 updated BSG on the committee’s moving out aid proposal, which was approved during last week’s meeting, asking for volunteers to distribute packing tape to residence halls.
BSG members then proposed end-of-year events and initiatives to direct its remaining budget toward. Proposals for food trucks and gelato at today’s Earth Day celebration on Coe Quad received unanimous approval.
While the assembly expressed support for a proposal to grant the Yellow Bike Club (YBC) an additional $2,000 to purchase ten new bikes, some members raised questions regarding the nature of the funding. BSG McKeen Center Representative Amala Raj ’28 suggested a discretionary fund instead to allow the club to direct its resources to meet its needs.
“Two of the other bike mechanics are good friends of mine, and I’ve heard them talking about [how] we wish we could have more hours, [but] we don’t have enough to pay everybody,” Raj said.
BSG decided that it would request money from the Treasury Funding Commission for the YBC funds.
Chair of the Student Affairs Committee and incoming BSG president Aidan Aybar ’28 concluded the meeting with an overview of the preliminary budget proposal for the upcoming academic year. Aybar underscored his commitment to maintaining current services and proposed raising the BSG budget to accommodate shuttle services and the annual “Cold at Coe” event.
“That way, we really free ourselves [up] to make more progress,” Aybar said.
Claire Shim ’28 is a member of The Bowdoin Orient.
