BSG discusses several new initiatives

February 27, 2026

On Wednesday evening, Bowdoin Student Government (BSG) met in Mills Hall to discuss the development and expansion of several projects, including free laundry detergent for students, assisting with student storage over breaks and sponsoring a Student Wellness initiative to help students limit their phone usage.

BSG voted unanimously to allocate just over $100 toward installing Bricks, physical devices that temporarily disable phone apps and notifications until a user taps their phone to the device, in Hawthorne-Longfellow Library and Smith Union. BSG hopes this will allow students to maintain focus on their own terms.

Following up on a conversation from last week’s meeting, BSG plans to survey upperclassmen to determine how to best assist students with securing commercial storage over summer break.

“We could maybe do a partnership with a storage [company] so that people could potentially get discounts,” Chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee Claire Shim ’28 said.

BSG also discussed partnering with community host families that live in Brunswick to expand storage options.

Furthermore, the free laundry detergent program will potentially be expanded in the future, depending on feedback from housekeepers.

“We’ll look to expand the program to put [detergent] in all laundry rooms after break so that all students will have access,” BSG Vice President Harper Stevenson ’27 said.

Claire Shim ’28 is a member of the Bowdoin Orient.
