BSG holds last meeting of the year, discusses Ivies and passes proposal to ban campaign emailing

Bowdoin Student Government (BSG) gathered in the Mills Hall event space on Wednesday for its last official meeting of the academic year. The meeting centered on Ivies planning, approving a proposal to ban campus-wide emailing during campaigns and the passing of the gavel to the incoming president.
With no one in attendance for public comment, members first broke into their respective committees to prepare updates for the rest of the assembly. Angelica Gordon ’27, chair of the Facilities and Sustainability Committee, discussed last weekend’s Earth Day event, where BSG tabled for student feedback.
“We had this little poster that was just denoting how people knew BSG and what we could do for them. And that went pretty well,” Gordon said. “I feel like a lot of them know us from either the shuttle or Thanksgiving [break extension], so that’s something good to know.”
Following committee and class council updates, BSG Vice President Elliott Ewell ’27 invited Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Dean of Student Engagement and Leadership Katie Toro-Ferrari to discuss a new leadership and civic engagement fellowship program. Toro-Ferrari encouraged interested students to reach out to her for more details.
Ewell also discussed the return of Ivies to the Brunswick Apartments Quad this weekend, noting that it would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of BSG members and collaboration with the College.
“That was really hard to do,” Ewell said. “In order to do this, one of the things the school asked us to do was to give letters to the people that live around Bruns, letting them know that this is happening.”
Next, Sophomore Class Council President Blake Covert ’27 discussed his proposal from last week’s meeting to ban emailing as a campaign medium. The current wording in the bylaws prohibits mass emailing, but Covert said this wording is vague and easily exploited. The proposal passed after a brief discussion.
“If we’re not going to define what mass emailing is,… I think it’s just easier for us as a governing body to get rid of emailing altogether,” Covert said.
To conclude the meeting, BSG President Eisa Rafat ’25 addressed the assembly before passing the BSG gavel to next year’s president, Alex Kruse ’26.
“You guys have been doing some really important work over this year,” Rafat said. “I also think it’s really nice because there isn’t a lot of visibility, but this assembly has continued to work through that. And to me that’s a sign of people who genuinely are committed to this idea.”
