To the Editor of the Orient:

I appreciate the kind piece you wrote about my assignment as Chargé d'affaires in Libya, but I do have one correction. It is true that I was an undistinguished student at Bowdoin. It is even true that I was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. In these respects, I am guilty as charged. But it is slander to allege that I was ever a member of the hockey team. I deny this in the strongest possible terms, whatever my alumni file says. I was a gentle and inoffensive sort, as those who knew me then can confirm.

Sincerely,

Laurence Pope '67
