On Saturday and Sunday, October 23 and 24, the men’s and women’s rowing teams competed in the Head of the Charles Regatta (HOCR) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The annual HOCR is the largest rowing regatta in the world, drawing over 11,000 competitors.
As COVID-19 continues to rage, the Bowdoin crew team has maintained both team camaraderie and physical fitness throughout the year of social distancing. While some teams might lack self-motivation amidst the chaos of this past year, the crew team has had very few issues maintaining their athletes’ fitness.
A few weeks before he passed away last January, Henry Zietlow ’22 rowed a marathon all by himself. An ergathon, or erg marathon, entails completing a marathon distance (26.2 miles or 42,000 meters) on an indoor rowing machine called an erg.
The Bowdoin crew team stroked their way to the top at this past weekend’s Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, with the men’s first varsity boat placing fourth out of 41 boats in the men’s collegiate 4+ event and the women’s first varsity boat coming in 13th in the women’s college 4+ out of a field of 36 crews.
When Head Coach Gil Birney retired last spring after 22 years, the Bowdoin crew team had a major void to fill. Stepping into his new position as head coach is former assistant Doug Welling. The team also added assistant coach Ry Hills, who brings with her a strong commitment to physical fitness and experience competing in national championship regattas.
This Saturday, the men and women’s rowing teams will compete in the New England Rowing Championships in Worcester, Massachusetts. The regatta will be the second of the program’s three championships, which also include the Knecht Cup and the Dad Vail.
Coach Gil Birney has decided to step down from the position of head rowing coach at Bowdoin College after contributing 22 years of service to the program. During that time, Birney has dedicated a great deal of energy and enthusiasm to building the rowing program that Bowdoin students take part in and cheer for today.
This past weekend the Bowdoin rowing team had an excellent performance at the 2017 Head of the Charles Regatta, a world-renowned race held annually in Boston, Mass. At the event, the rowing team had the opportunity to compete against rowing clubs from all over the world.
Last summer, two men’s boats from the Bowdoin’s rowing program competed in the world’s most prestigious regatta, Henley Royal Regatta, on the River Thames in England. The two men’s boats, each with four rowers and a coxswain, finished 10th and 14th during the time trial in June.
Straight shutouts. The women’s tennis team is currently 10-2, 4-1 NESCAC after a 9-0 win over Connecticut College (6-5, 0-3 NESCAC) on Sunday. Despite injuries that have weakened the team’s roster, the Polar Bears have won three of their last four games—all dominant 9-0 shutouts—and are currently ranked fourth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III poll.
