Men’s swimming ends season at sixth place in the NESCAC
The men’s swimming and diving team ended its 2012-2013 season with a sixth-place finish in the NESCAC Championship at Wesleyan this past weekend. The Polar Bears broke several school records during the course of the meet.
Williams won its 11th-straight NESCAC Championship with a decisive 1936.5 total points, defeating rival Amherst by 112 points. In sixth, Bowdoin earned 769.5 points. Ryan Kulesza ’15 had a particularly impressive meet, breaking the school records in both the 200 and 400 IM, making him the only person to hold both records at the same time in recent history and the best IM swimmer in Bowdoin history.
He broke the previous 200 IM record of 1:55.22 with a time of 1:54.42 and then secured his place in program history with an eighth place finish in the 400 IM with a time of 4:05.34.

Women's swimming breaks several records in NESCAC championships
The women’s swimming and diving team came in seventh in the NESCAC championships this past weekend, smashing several school records in the process.
With a final point total of 1972.5, Amherst won its first ever NESACAC women’s swimming championship, defeating long-time rival Williams. Finishing seventh, the Polar Bears had a final point total of 707.
Though not triumphant, the team ended its 2012-2013 season on a high note, breaking several long-standing school records and posting many season best times.Katherine Foley ’13 had the best individual performances of the weekend for the team, coming in second overall in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:21.04 and fourth in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time 17:25.69. Both times broke school records, with Foley beating her own time of 10:33 in the 1000-yard freestyle and breaking a record in the 1650 that had stood since 1995. To round it out, Foley broke her own record that she set last year in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:01.27.

Foley ’13 breaks record as swim beats Colby
Katherine Foley ’13 smashed Bowdoin’s 1000-meter freestyle record by three-quarters of a second on Saturday as both the men’s and women’s swim teams beat NESCAC rival Colby by a landslide in their home pool. The men beat Colby by a score of 211-83 while the women won 198-95. For the women, Foley dominated the pool, winning both the 1000- and 500-freestyles with times of 10:33.19 and 5:12.86, the first of which broke the school record that had stood for eight years. Foley, in her final season at Bowdoin, now has two appearances in the team’s record book—she also holds the fastest time in the 500-yard freestyle, which she broke last year.

Both swimming teams sweep Trinity and Wesleyan at home
The men’s and women’s swim teams trounced NESCAC rivals Wesleyan and Trinity in a home meet last Saturday. The men improved their record to 4-1 with the dual meet, defeating Wesleyan 205-72 and Trinity 198-87. The twin victories also placed the women’s record at 4-1 after the team beat Wesleyan 171-122 and Trinity 199.5-93.5.

The swimming and diving teams performed well in their meets over the break, decisively defeating Bates on January 17 before a strong showing at a non-scoring meet against UMaine Orono the next day.

With her final kill in Morrell Gymnasium last Sunday, captain Kristin Hanczor '12 not only sealed Bowdoin's first NESCAC volleyball championship but also cemented her place in team history. The team's remarkable 3-0 victory over defending champion Middlebury in the championship match on Sunday was due in no small part to Hanczor's leadership, as she earned 12 kills in the course of play, spearheading the attack.

For the first time in program history, the women's volleyball team has secured both the NESCAC No. 1 seed and home court advantage in the conference tournament. Thanks to a pair of victories over Wesleyan and Trinity last weekend, the Polar Bears' season record stands at 23-2 overall and 10-0 in the NESCAC. This is a new school record, surpassing the 22-win mark of the 1988 team. It also marks the first time that a NESCAC team has gone undefeated in the conference since Tufts did so in 2008.

The women's volleyball team earned a 3-0 senior night victory on Tuesday against Endicott, marking the team's last regular season home game and keeping Bowdoin undefeated in Morrell Gymnasium this year with a perfect record of 9-0. The men's soccer team heads into the 2011 season in a highly enviable position.
