On Friday, after a tough 16–4 loss, the Polar Bears came charging back, winning the second game of the day 5–0 with help from Jeremiah Chessie ’28. Chessie pitched five scoreless innings, including three strikeouts and allowing only three hits.
“It was a great game. After losing a close one in the first game, I knew the second game was even more important,” Chessie wrote in an email to the Orient. “I went out there [and] executed some pitches, and the defense made plays behind me.”
The offense played behind him too, with RBIs from Reuben Siegel ’27 and a trio of Wills (Bordes ’26, Logue ’26 and Cooke ’28).
On Saturday, the team won its second game in a walk-off win. Bordes scored on a wild pitch, ending the game with a winning score of 10–9.
“Game one didn’t go our way on Saturday,” Bordes wrote in an email to the Orient. “It felt good to see the team bounce back and fight for a win in the second half of the doubleheader.”
The team is now preparing for its last conference matchup of the regular season against Colby College (17–11; 4–5 NESCAC) in three games this weekend. The first starts at 4 p.m. today in Waterville with a home doubleheader tomorrow starting at noon.
Bordes mentioned how the team will focus on playing with grit and soaking up every moment as the season draws to a close.
“This is a big series for us since it will determine if we make it into the playoffs or not,” Bordes wrote. “We are all trying to embrace the gravity of the moment, have fun and play as hard and aggressive as we can.”
The Polar Bears have faced ups and downs this season and learned what it takes to play their best game and work through challenges when they arise.
“To play our best, we have to stay loose and take each game one pitch at a time,” Bordes wrote. “A lot of our losses have been self-inflicted this year, so it will be important for us to control the controllables and put the pressure on Colby.”
The Bowdoin baseball team will round out the rest of the regular season with an away non-conference game on Tuesday against the University of Maine (12–24).
