Acceptance rate falls to 6.8 percent for the Class of 2029

April 4, 2025

The Office of Admissions concluded its admissions cycle for the Class of 2029 on March 21 when it released results for the regular decision round. Across all rounds, the College admitted 952 students out of a total of 14,045 applications, for an acceptance rate of 6.8 percent, a slight decrease from the Class of 2028’s 7 percent rate and the lowest in the College’s history.

Senior Vice President and Dean of Admissions and Student Aid Claudia Marroquin ’06 spoke highly of the admitted Class of 2029 in an email to the Orient.

“The admitted students are remarkable young people. It is truly an honor to have learned about their lived experiences, their goals, their aspirations and their humanity,” Marroquin wrote. “These students are creative, resourceful, empathetic, curious, brave, resilient, wicked smart, humble and wonderful potential members of the Bowdoin community.”

Students in the admitted class represent all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the Mariana Islands, military addresses overseas and 42 countries. Fifty-eight percent currently attend public or charter high schools, and 24 percent of students with completed financial aid applications will qualify for Pell Grants. Additionally, 25 members of the class matched with the College through the QuestBridge National Match process. As was the case last year following the 2023 Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard Supreme Court decision, the Office of Admissions did not publish the percentage of admitted students who are domestic students of color and international students.

Twenty-four percent of admitted students are in the first generation of their family to attend college, and Marroquin noted that applications among first-generation students have increased.

“Our applicant pool saw a slight increase over last year’s pool, but we admitted a relatively similar number of students,” she wrote. “While our [Early Decision I] applicant pool was fairly consistent in terms of numbers, we saw growth in both [Early Decision 2] and Regular Decision pools. Additionally, we’ve seen a growth in applications from students who are first generation to college.”

Yield programming for the incoming class began on Tuesday and, as in recent years, will continue throughout the month of April with both in-person and virtual events. The flagship on-campus event, Bowdoin Bearings, will take place from April 10 to 11. The Office of Admissions will also host a one-day Polar Preview on April 21.

Marroquin emphasized that, along with the Office of Admissions, Bowdoin students, faculty, staff and alumni all play a role in welcoming admitted students.

“We are grateful to all Bowdoin community members who have volunteered to write a congratulatory postcard to an admitted student and to members of the faculty who have partnered with admissions to write welcome emails to students as well,” Marroquin wrote. “While the admissions office is responsible for evaluating the applications of students, it is the entire Bowdoin community that is involved in our yield programming.”

The deadline to enroll is May 1, after which more information will be available about the incoming Class of 2029.

“We’re excited to meet so many admitted students and their supporters on campus in April and look forward to seeing who ultimately joins the Bowdoin community,” Marroquin wrote.
