Slow and fast, lively and meditative, the December Dance Concert showcased a wide range of approaches to movement last night in Pickard Theater. The concert is the culmination of the repertory dance courses offered in the fall semester, including Ballet, Modern, and African American Diasporic Dance.

Readers of William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” may not remember the two minor characters around whom Tom Stoppard chose to structure his play, “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.” The work, which was produced by Masque and Gown, opened last night in Pickard Theater and will be playing tonight as well as tomorrow night. The performance directly addresses questions that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern—who, in “Hamlet,” appear only in the beginning to deliver a letter carrying word of their own deaths—may have had, such as “who am I? Why do I exist?” and “What is this death to which I have been so casually consigned?”

Last Tuesday night experimental jazz quintet The Subjects gathered in Gibson Hall to showcase a selection of pieces, most of which were composed by the group’s own members. The performance marked the campus debut of new Assistant Professor of Music Tracy McMullen, who plays the saxophone and contributed a composition titled “10 a.m. Blues.”

James Boeding ’14 spent this summer taking more photographs than most other students do in their lifetimes. As a recipient of the Visual Arts Department’s annual McKee Photography Grant, Boeding completed a series of photos entitled “The Weekender: Millerton to New York City.”
