Director of Safety and Security Randy Nichols briefed Bowdoin Student Government on expectations and preparations for Ivies at its Wednesday night meeting.

Changes, including a new registration process for guests, are expected to make security arrangements tighter than ever before.

During any given Ivies, it is generally the guests of students that pose the majority of security problems, said Nichols.

This year, each student who brings a guest is responsible for his or her friend's actions, and may be subject to disciplinary measures if any issues arise.

"This is my seventh Ivies. Each year I think we get a little more safe, a little bit more refined in our approach," said Nichols. "There's a little bit more accountability for guests in that they're tied with the student who sponsored them, and so if there's an incident, we can hold the student responsible for the conduct of their guests, and of course we'll also hold the guests responsible as best we can."

Bowdoin students will be issued pink wristbands while their guests will be issued green ones, so that Security will be able to easily identify individuals who are permitted to attend the concert.

This will be the third year that Ivies will be held at Whittier Field, rather than on the Quad.

"The problem with the main Quad was that it was impossible to secure that area—anybody can get in. By moving it into a fenced area, it allowed us to keep the event much safer, and we've had great success at Whittier Field," said Nichols.

Nichols stressed, however, that the security procedures were not intended to reduce the excitement of Ivies.

"The bottom line is that we're asking students to have a great time," said Nichols.

"We enjoy Ivies as well, and it's a great time here on campus. A lot of my best memories here at Bowdoin are during Ivies week. Just be safe and responsible. If you choose to drink, drink responsibly," he added.

BSG also allocated $800 toward the Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day Breakfast.
