BSG confirms new leaders, approves event funding and considers campus safety
January 30, 2026
On Wednesday evening in Mills Hall, Bowdoin Student Government (BSG) assembled for its weekly meeting to share updates about campus safety initiatives, confirm new student leadership and approve funding for its annual winter community event, “Cold at Coe.”
Senior Vice President and Dean for Student Affairs Jim Hoppe opened the meeting by reiterating the College’s commitment to ensuring students’ access to pertinent information, adequate resources and community support in response to challenging national events influencing the Bowdoin and Brunswick communities.
Hoppe announced that the College will be partnering with the American Civil Liberties Union of Maine by holding workshops early next week, which will be composed of training and Q&A sessions to prepare students for possible interactions with law enforcement officials.
Along with the College’s continued collaboration with state and national organizations, Associate Vice President of Safety and Security Bill Harwood has held 27 training sessions with various offices on campus to prepare students and staff members for the possible arrival of federal agents on campus.
Hoppe explained that in the improbable instance of federal officers claiming to have a warrant, students should immediately contact Security. Only the College’s general counsel is authorized to validate such warrants, he said.
Although there is no current indication that Brunswick or the College are of interest to federal authorities, Hoppe encouraged students to remain vigilant, avoid inviting unknown individuals into locked buildings and support one another without “sowing unnecessary fear.”
BSG then discussed a proposal regarding vacancies in the Junior Class Council. In a unanimous vote, Raghad Mohamed ’27 was approved as class president, Ollie Tannahill ’27 as vice president and Juliet Cisneros ’27 as programming director.
Chair of Student Affairs Committee Aidan Aybar ’28 presented a funding proposal for BSG’s annual “Cold at Coe” event, scheduled for February 27 on Dudley Coe Quad. The assembly unanimously passed an expanded budget of $6,000—up from the initially proposed $4,750—to accommodate new merchandise purchases.
Funding for the event encompasses hot chocolate, s’mores, a food truck and outdoor games.
