A preview of arts and entertainment this Family Weekend

This Family Weekend, enjoy a packed lineup of arts and entertainment events for students and families on campus!

From newer exhibitions at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art (BCMA) to the Student Group Showcase, there are plenty of fun opportunities to take advantage of this weekend, with families, friends or both!

Saturday (10/25)

Visit the BCMA 

The BCMA will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday for visitors to explore the museum’s exhibitions.

The museum’s newest addition, “Visions Unsettled: Stages of the Self in the Hispanic World, from the Spanish Empire to the Global Present” captures how identity has been constructed throughout the Hispanic world, with a range of works from the 16th century to modern day. “Medieval Art from the Wyvern Collection: Global Networks and Creative Connections” opened in early September and highlights student-curated works that explore the links between Asia, the Near East, North Africa and Europe from the fifth through the 15th centuries.

Cowboys Football Half-Time Performance 

As the Polar Bears take on Trinity College at home on Whittier Field at 1 p.m., the Cowboys, Bowdoin’s hip hop dance team, will take the turf for a halftime performance.

Tour of the MakerSpace

Take a tour of Jewett Hall’s MakerSpace from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., where you can learn about the facility’s 3D printers, laser engraver, vinyl cutter and tools to create small-scale electronics available to students!

Bowdoin Chamber Choir Open Rehearsal 

From 3 to 4 p.m., Bowdoin Chamber Choir will be holding an open rehearsal in the Chapel for students and families. The Chamber Choir is Bowdoin’s only vocal ensemble and features a wide variety of music and genres that span time periods in their repertoire.

Student Group Showcase:

A wide range of student performance groups will give the audience a glimpse of what they have been working on this semester from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Morrell Gymnasium at the Student Group Showcase. The first part of the event will feature each of Bowdoin’s a capella groups, including performances from the Meddiebempsters, the Longfellows, Ursus Verses, Bear Tones, BOKA and Miscellania. Members of the Nightingale Society, a student-run poetry club, will recite poetry in the break between a capella performances.

If you missed the halftime show at the football game, don’t worry because the Cowboys will be performing again at the showcase. Their act will be accompanied by performances from Polar Bear Swing Dance and VAGUE—Bowdoin’s jazz and contemporary dance group. Stop by to see the first performances of the year for these groups.

Sunday (10/26)

Jazz Brunch 

On Sunday morning from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Thorne Hall, student musicians will set the scene for the annual Jazz Brunch with live music performances throughout dining services. Tickets are required for attendance and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Families can reserve tickets at the Welcome Center in Smith Union on Friday and Saturday.

Concert Band Concert 

Concert band will have their first performance of the semester this Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m. in Kanbar Auditorium located in Studzinski Hall. The theme for this fall’s performance is “Taking Flight,” featuring “Rise of the Firebird” composed by Steven Reineke, “Soaring with the Eagles” by Matt Bandman and “Highlights from ‘Planes’” by Martin Mancina and arranged by Michael Brown.
