BSG discusses constitutional revisions, spring break shuttle and encampment statement
February 21, 2025
On Wednesday, Bowdoin Student Government (BSG) held its fourth meeting of the spring semester in Mills Hall. The meeting began with BSG President Eisa Rafat ’25 outlining the agenda for the evening, which consisted of the new constitution, a spring break shuttle and a statement on the encampment.
BSG broke into committees and reconvened shortly after to share updates with the assembly. The Committee of Academic Affairs reported a positive response from the student body regarding its recent survey on access to course syllabi during registration. The Student Activities Funding Committee shared that it is running low on its budget despite the committee’s best efforts to follow guidelines. The Student Affairs Committee highlighted that the first library snacks event will take place this Sunday and that planning for Ivies has begun. The Diversity and Inclusion Committee shared its plans to release a statement addressing attacks on diversity, equity and inclusion, white supremacy and hate crimes.
Vice President Elliot Ewell ’27 then briefly reviewed his proposal for a new BSG constitution, which he had presented a few weeks prior. He explained that the new constitution aims to change the static nature of the current BSG structure, clarify voting procedure and make the document more understandable and usable.
“The way we are proceeding with this process is by two four-fifths votes in two different assembly meetings,” Ewell wrote in an email to the Orient. “The first vote passed today. We will take the next vote at our next meeting. It will be in force for everything preparing for next year’s BSG.”
Next, Chair of the Student Organizations Oversight Committee Vincent Chen ’27 reviewed plans for a spring break shuttle. BSG sent out a survey to the student body last week to gauge interest in a funded spring break shuttle to the Portland International Jetport for Bowdoin students. The proposal for the shuttle passed unanimously.
“We decided on getting a 56-person charter bus to leave Bowdoin at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 7, and we will have a smaller 34-person vehicle leaving at 9 a.m. the same day. We will also have two Bowdoin vans leaving the next day at 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. We determined these times based on the forms that we put out last week,” Chen said.
Finally, BSG moved to discuss a statement regarding the encampment. Rafat explained that the assembly wants to release a statement but the details are still in progress.
“An overwhelming majority of people within the assembly wanted to put a statement out as a group,” Rafat said. “We haven’t voted for the specific statement [yet],… but we want to put a statement out.”
At this point, Rafat called for an executive session to review a draft of the statement and continue collective work on it, closing the meeting to the public.
