BSG holds first meeting of academic year

September 27, 2024

Bowdoin Student Government (BSG) convened on Wednesday night in the Mills Hall event space. The first meeting of the academic year mainly served as an introduction to BSG, its members and its structure.

BSG is composed of both an executive board and a general assembly. The executive board introduced themselves and reminded the members of the general assembly of their commitment to attend each BSG meeting and uphold the BSG constitution. Members of the general assembly then introduced themselves and discussed their goals and concerns for the upcoming year.

Joining the BSG this week were its newest members. Last week, BSG held its first-year Class Council elections, where Andy Mugisha ’28 was elected Class Council president and Mishal Alibhai ’28 was elected vice president. Additionally, Jason Sherrick ’28 was elected treasurer and Max Grad ’28 was elected programming director.

Members then broke up by committee for further discussion. BSG President Eisa Rafat ’25 explained that most work will be carried out within committees but emphasized that initiative proposals and funding requests will involve the entire assembly. He encouraged every member to be frank, seek feedback on proposals and offer constructive criticism to others.

“We really invite everyone to ask questions,” Rafat said. “If you’re confused about something, I’m probably also confused about it in all honesty, so please ask [about] it.”

The meeting concluded with the announcement that Professor of History and Associate Dean for Curriculum Dallas G. Denery II will meet with the assembly on Wednesday to discuss course registration changes and respond to questions.
