Letter to the Editor: Challenge the status-quo

October 25, 2019

This piece represents the opinion of the author .

To the Editor,

As a recent subscriber to the Orient, I was really pleased to see your editorial in big support of the Bowdoin staff and the Bowdoin Labor Alliance! Clear and properly outspoken! Well done. And, as to the courage of the 12 housekeepers, I feel real gratitude for their daring to lead the way toward principles of fairness at Bowdoin. It seems that the College’s economic principles have more to do with interest than with fairness or democracy. In that way, they are a reflection of our corporate-run federal government and your choice of the word “shameful” is just right. We won’t move away from our national crises (economic disparity, global climate change, militarism and resource wars) until we begin to challenge the status quo. The very wealthy must be made to shift gears without delay. If its fortunes they’re after, there are fortunes to be earned in making that shift. I hope to see more Bowdoin students and alums insisting on it.
