Early Sunday morning, a conflict between a few Colby students and security guards heightened to a physical altercation.

A week later than expected, Bowdoin students, faculty, and staff had the opportunity to listen to Chris Hill '74 speak on a myriad of issues related to his work with the U.S. State Department. Hill, who was recently nominated to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to Iraq by President Barack Obama, was originally scheduled to speak at last Friday's Common Hour, but rescheduled due to his pending confirmation by the U.S. Senate.

As students returned from break, they may have noticed a new face around campus. The health center added a new consulting physician to its staff, Dr. Cindy Asbjornsen. The hiring decision was announced through the student digest during spring break.

Swimming heads toward NESCACs
After a split-decision weekend, the Bowdoin swim teams look ahead the NESCAC championship meets, which begin next weekend at home for the women's team. The women will look to avenge last weekend's 157-131 loss to Colby.

Squash splits in Hanover
The squash teams went into Thanksgiving Break after a split-decision weekend for the men and women. Both teams defeated Connecticut College before falling to host Dartmouth in Hanover, NH. On Saturday, the men faced the Camels at 2 p.m., securing a solid 6-3 victory. The Bears' lineup dominated the opponents at the no. 2 through 7 spots, with Andy Bernard '11, Rahul Madan-Mohan '11, Rob Stanley '10, Arun Makhija '10, Peter Cipriano '10 and Robert Lynn '09 all winning their matches.

Health insurance company remedies billing mistake
Due to an IT glitch, more than 30 Bowdoin students who had waived the College's health insurance were mistakenly charged for it this summer.

'Grey's' Dr. McDreamy sports Bowdoin T-shirt
In the October 23 episode of the popular medical drama "Grey's Anatomy," observant viewers might have noticed that Dr. Shepard?played by Lewiston native Patrick Dempsey?was shown wearing a grey Bowdoin T-shirt in the opening scene for exactly two seconds.

Cleaveland Street apartments deemed unsafe for big gatherings
Students living in the apartments at 10 Cleaveland Street were informed in an e-mail Thursday afternoon that they should limit the number of visitors to their apartments because the building may not be structurally safe for large gatherings. In the e-mail, Director of Residential Life Mary Pat McMahon wrote, "Each apartment in Cleaveland Street should limit visitors to no more than three or four guests at any given time. The structure is quite safe as a residence, but it should not be used for large gatherings."

Cars banned for future first-year classes
Zipcars and the Bowdoin Shuttle to offer alternative transportation options
First years who drive to campus next fall will have to send their cars back home. In a continued to effort to promote sustainability and environmental responsibility, first-year students beginning with the class of 2013 will no longer be allowed to bring cars to campus. The decision will help to eliminate approximately 100 cars from campus.

Brown to leave after 11 years, will enroll in the fall at Muskie School of Public Service
As of Saturday, Bowdoin's Department of Safety and Security will be one man short: Assistant Director of Security Mike Brown will be leaving his post after 11 years of service at the College. In the fall, Brown will attend graduate school at the Muskie School of Public Service in Portland, where he is planning to focus on non-profit management.

Bowdoin Brief: Students register in droves for ?PolarBear? Triathalon
Bowdoin's aspiring triathletes will have a chance to compete in the annual College-sponsored PolarBear Triathlon on May 3. Some may remember the triathlon by its original name, IronBear. The event underwent a name change this fall, after organizers received a "cease and desist" letter from the owners of IronMan for copyright infringement.

Quiet flu season at Bowdoin
Though the College had a severe outbreak of pneumonia on campus this fall, the number of students diagnosed with the flu this winter has been consistent with years past, according to Interim Director of the Health Center Sandra Hayes. "I'd say it's on track for us," said Hayes, who added that since students returned from Winter Break in January, the Dudley Coe Health Center has seen between 15 and 20 cases of the flu.

Scheduling proposal decision postponed
A revised attendance policy, proposed by the Student Affairs Committee, will not be voted on this semester at either of the two remaining faculty meetings. If it is passed in the fall, the policy would be included in the college catalogue for the academic year 2008-2009.

Alumnus puts Bowdoin in the Spotlight
Alumnus Cole Harris, a member of the Class of 1974, has been working to get Patrick Dempsey's character on "Grey's Anatomy" to wear Bowdoin gear. While Harris is not on Bowdoin's payroll, he promotes the College's name in Hollywood out of sheer school pride. But had it not been for Harris's perseverance in gaining admission to Bowdoin as a student, Dempsey might have been asked to sport the name of another alma mater.

Since January, the Bowdoin Bake Shop has used 28,080 eggs, 10,900 pounds of all-purpose flour, 7,080 pounds of granulated sugar, 4,290 pounds of margarine, 2,625 pounds of chocolate chips, and 1,740 pounds of blueberries.

When candidates for Bowdoin Student Government (BSG) office file their petitions next week, they will begin their campaigns under a set of reformed election rules. Petitions for candidacy are due Wednesday at 8 p.m. for the election that is slated to take place April 19 through April 21.

Josh Kelley, a young musician from the South, will be playing tonight in Smith Union's Morrell Lounge at 8 p.m. Kelley is known for his top 10 hit, "Amazing." He last toured with Dave Matthews and the Goo Goo Dolls.
