Afro-Latin Ensemble's performance showcases unique Bowdoin group
Students in the Afro-Latin Music Ensemble and enrolled in Music 281 presented their final concert of the year on Wednesday night in Studzinski Recital Hall.
Under the direction of Professor Michael Birenbaum Quintero, the group of 10 students performed a selection of Afro-Cuban religious songs as well as pieces from Colombia’s southern Pacific and Caribbean coasts.
According to Quintero, the ensemble’s repertoire grants Bowdoin a unique place among the musical cultures of other colleges.

Fichtner's 'And the Boy' depicts horrors of World War II
Sam Fichtner ’14 presented his short film “A Chlapec: And the Boy” on Tuesday night in Smith Auditorium. The film, which Fichtner directed himself, was the product of his fall semester study at Prague’s renowned film school FAMU International. Fichtner is a film studies minor. “And the Boy” was his first experience actually making a film. “Our film department, intellectually engaging and comprehensive as it is, focuses on studies, history, and theory,” he said. “In going abroad I was seeking to get some hands-on experience.” Fichtner’s desire to create films landed him in Prague, one of the global centers of film. He chose a film production program with CET Academic Programs, which provides students with access to world-class resources, including materials from Barrandov Studios, the largest film studio in Europe. Fichtner’s academic work was tailored to prepare him the culminating project of the semester: creating a professionally made short feature.

With new pavilion, Colby museum to become largest in Maine
With the July opening of the $15 million Alfond-Lunder Family Pavilion, the Colby College Museum of Art will become the largest art museum in Maine. The event will mark the completion of a six year construction project that began in 2007 when Colby alumnus Peter Lunder and his wife Paula chose to donate the entirety of their $100 million, 500-piece private collection of celebrated American art to the institution. Joachim Homann, the curator of the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, sees Colby’s recent expansion as an exciting opportunity to discuss the advancement of college art museums. “It is really a reason for the whole field to celebrate, because it pushes the boundaries of what academic art museums are doing,” said Homann.

Bowdoin Chamber Orchestra comes back home revamped
The Bowdoin Chamber Orchestra (BCO) shifted focus this semester in an attempt to draw upon the musical talent of the Bowdoin community. In past years, the group has collaborated with the Bates student orchestra and several Brunswick musicians, who filled out instrumental sections. “It was sort of a harsh reminder that we couldn’t get enough students to take interest in joining the orchestra,” said violinist Adam Zhang ’14, who has played in the orchestra since his first year at the College.

BMC kicks off year with live student performances
Bowdoin Music Collective’s first coffeehouse performance last Thursday showcased an array of student talent, presenting original songs, cover pieces and improvised jam sessions. The performance was held in Jack MacGee’s Pub and included many established members of Bowdoin’s music scene, featuring acts by Veronica Verdin ’15, Caitlin Greenwood ’15, Marc Seligson ’12, Rami Stucky ’14, Michaela Martin ’14, and Matt Willian ’15.

Maine Pro Musica performs, brings Classical to campus
Maine Pro Musica, a thirty-two piece orchestra based in Rockport, Maine, performed at Studizinski Recital Hall last Saturday afternoon in the final show of their four-concert summer tour. Saturday’s program consisted of traditional classical works by child prodigies spanning several genres. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Overture to the Marriage of Figaro,” Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Concerto, no. 3, op.37, and Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No 4, op.90, were performed.
