Subject: Power Outage Message

To Bowdoin Students,

Current weather reports estimate that substantial effects of Hurricane Sandy will reach Brunswick between 7:00 p.m. and 12:00 midnight tonight. High winds could cause power outages on campus and in the local community.

Things you should know:

  • There are generators that will keep life-safety systems working, including heat in your buildings and emergency lighting in common hallways. Toilets on campus should continue to be fully functional.
  • Moulton Union and Thorne Dining will be open regular hours today for all meals. Heavy rain may require Facilities to place sand bags near the main lower-level dining hall entrance on the north side of Moulton Union. If you are unable to enter Moulton through this north door, you may use either of the lobby entrance doors located at the front and back of Moulton Union and the stairs to access the dining hall.
  • The Convenience Store, Pub, and Café will close at 4:00 p.m. today.
  • Candles or other flames present a serious fire danger and are NOT PERMITTED on campus. Power outages are not an exception to this policy.

 Things you should do:

  • Charge electronics (e.g., cellular telephones, tablets, laptop computers) now, before any potential power outage.
  • Double-check that batteries are working in your flashlights or headlamps.
  • Gather power cords for phones and laptops so you can charge them in generator-equipped buildings (e.g., Thorne, Smith Union, Moulton Union, etc.), if necessary.
  • Unplug any unnecessary devices to avoid power surges when the power returns.
  • If you must be outside during times of high winds, please be careful and aware of your surroundings. Report any downed trees or dangerous situations to Security at x3314.
  • If you are a fall athlete, check with your coach regarding any change in your practice schedule.
  • Expect to hear from your faculty if any classes are cancelled. If you don’t hear from someone, assume your class will be held as normal.
  • Check the Bowdoin website for updates to this information, including any event cancellations.

Thank you for your attention to these items. As always, please contact Security (x3314) if you have any concerns during the storm.

Sincerely,

Tim Foster
