The Trinity football team prevented a homecoming victory for the Polar Bears with a fourth quarter rally that clinched their contested 27-10 victory.
With over 2,000 fans at Whittier field, Bowdoin (1-4 NESCAC) came out strong, with junior Zach Donnarumma scored the game’s first touchdown on a 21-yard run up the middle. Donnarumma finished the game with 143 yards on 25 attempts. Trinity tied the score less than five minutes later with a 15-yard touchdown pass.
“Going into halftime, we thought we were going to win,” said junior linebacker Griffin Cardew. “We let up a really good opportunity.”
After a scoreless third quarter, the Bantams responded with two rushing touchdowns in the fourth. Trinity has traditionally relied on their high-powered rushing attack, and though it seemed inevitable that Bantam’s running backs would eventually break through, Bowdoin slowed them down, only allowing 199 yards on Saturday.
Head Coach Dave Caputi commended the defense and said he hopes the offense can provide additional support in the future, especially in the fourth quarter.
“[Trinity] had a 10-minute drive, but we have to make the plays on offense to take the pressure off of the defense,” Caputi said. “That’s on us.”
The Polar Bears look to bounce back with a win against Wesleyan (4-1 NESCAC) this weekend. Bowdoin dominated last year’s matchup against the Cardinals as Donarumma rushed for a career-high 158 yards and the defense asserted their presence, only allowing two field goals.
“As a team, I hope we can mature and play mistake-free football,” Cardew said. “Our team goal right now is to go 1-0 this week.”
