In a performance themed "Death and Heaven," Senior Lecturer in Music Tony Antolini will lead the Bowdoin Chorus and the Mozart Mentors Orchestra in a range of pieces including the New England premiere of Karl Jenkins' "Requiem." After premiering last night, the show will be performed again tonight at 7:30 p.m.
Antolini said he made the choice to perform the "Requiem" following the 2011 Tohuku earthquake and tsunami that struck northeastern Japan.
Referring to the piece's combination of a western requiem text and Japanese haiku, he added, "The melding of the requiem text—a service for the dead—and the Japanese haiku of death seemed a fitting memorial to all those who lost their lives on that terrible day."
The Bowdoin Chamber Choir, led by Professor of Music Robert Greenlee, will perform Saturday, May 5 and Sunday, May 6 at 3 p.m. in the Bowdoin Chapel. The performance will feature several African and European hymns and spirituals, including a rendition of W.H. Monk's "Abide With Me" which will be conducted by Henry Hoagland '12, a music major.
