Brought to you by the Alliance for Sexual Assault Prevention, "It's a Date!" sets up brave Bowdoin students on blind dates in order to report the hilarious, unexpected and awkward parts of their rendezvous.
Each installment features a new pair of students who have agreed to undertake a blind dating adventure. Although the students featured here may not find true love, they might just find out that going on a date—romantic or otherwise—isn't as terrifying as it may initially seem. This week, sophomores Michael Walsh and Katie Mac got to know each other over a sushi dinner at Little Toyko.
Say you're on a study-date with him/her and snacks are requested—what would you buy to tickle his/her fancy?
Michael Walsh: Gummy Bears.
Katie Mac: Mike likes sushi but it's too pricey so I'll have to substitute it with Swedish fish.
Who would play your date in a biopic of his/her life, and why?
MW: Isla Fisher because she's small and spunky.
KM: Mike likes to travel a lot so I'd say Santa Clause because he's the number one traveler in the world. However, Santa might have to lose a few pounds.
Who would your date choose to play Ivies if he or she was king or queen of the E-Board?
MW: Jason Mraz
KM: I think Jason Mraz for sure but otherwise he's fine with anyone from any genre.
Where do you think your date's campus poop bathroom is located?
MW: Druckenmiller.
KM: Because he's a science person, I would say Druckenmiller or maybe Hatch if it gets boring.
Your date only has time to visit three stores during an afternoon in Freeport. Which ones will he or she visit? Food counts as a store!
MW: L.L. Bean, J. Crew, Abercrombie and Fitch.
KM: L.L. Bean for sure, he probably needs outdoor gear for all the places he has visited. Johnny Rockets to chow down burgers and the Nike store.
ResLife just decided to allow pets in your date's apartment/dorm! What pet would he or she buy?
MW: A golden retriever named Dug.
KM: An elephant so that he doesn't need to go to the gym to bench press weights on a daily basis. Mike would name it Elefante.
What do you think the best day of the year is, according to your date, and why?
MW: I don't know about the year, but she likes Fridays because she gets to hang out with the awesome preschoolers at Family Focus.
KM: April 25 because it's not too hot, not too cold, all you need is a light jacket.
Where would you take him/her on a second date?
MW: Scarlet Bs.
KM: To a karaoke bar so he can find his inner diva. All guys have one.
If you could make any two people at Bowdoin go on a date like yours, who would it be?
MW: Randy Nichols and Connie who swipes cards at Thorne. Yes, I know they're both married.
KM: Matt and Zoe.
What was the best part of the date?
MW: Food and conversation.
KM: Getting to know Mike outside of class was fun. It was nice to get off campus for a change and be able to talk to another person who knows what it's like to be in the same boat at this stage in college.
What's the most surprising thing you found out about your date?
MW: She has family in Germany.
KM: Prior to the date, I thought he was a very serious and quiet person. However, I found out he used to play lacrosse and prefers team sports. Mike also already has a clear idea of what he would like to do for a profession, including becoming a nutrition doctor.
If you had to pick one song as the soundtrack to your date, what would it be?
MW: "We are Young" by Fun (ft. Janelle Monae).
KM: "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz, it came on at the restaurant.
