Following commanding first-place finishes at their sectional tournament last weekend, the ultimate Frisbee teams will head to the New England regional tournament next week. Stoned Clown, the men's team, went 3-0 in Saturday's round robin play—never winning by fewer than 11 points—before beating Bates 11-5 in the finals. The women, Chaos Theory, shut out Bates 15-0 before beating Colby 15-1 to claim first.
Stoned Clown and Chaos Theory are looking forward to strong bids to the Division III New England Regional Tournament. Both teams won all of their regular season games, and are the only squads in their division to boast unbeaten season records.
In the final rankings of the season, Stoned Clown is eighth in Open D-III according to Skyd Magazine's Power Rankings, and sixth according to USA Ultimate. The same organizations put Chaos Theory at fourth and sixth, respectively, in the Women's D-III rankings. Even though both teams are officially undefeated, they actually aren't ranked nearly as highly as teams with less impressive records.
"[This] is because of strength of schedule," said Stoned Clown captain Dylan Kane '12. "Both teams are ranked at the top of the Northeast, but we haven't been able to play most of the top teams from across the country. I think it's valid."
Both teams have the opportunity to make the national tournament on May 19 and 20 in Appleton, Wis. Twelve Stoned Clown and eight Chaos Theory players are graduating five days later, out of the 22 members on each team.
"The Clown will lose a lot of depth, but a number of our starters and top players are underclassmen, and each year we have seen more incoming freshmen with Ultimate experience," said Kane. "While I'm sure the team dynamic will be different next year, they will definitely have the potential to win the region and make a run at Nationals."
