To the Editors:

If Mr. Cespedes is incapable of discussing a sensitive topic without using hateful and hurtful speech, perhaps he should stay in college until he learns how to do it ("Forbidding hate speech contradicts need for open discourse," October 14).

It should not be beyond the capability of a Bowdoin student to do so.

Possibly Bowdoin needs to offer a class in basic civility. One may insist on one's right to use hate speech, but the rest of us also have the right to tell you to go away until you learn how to behave toward other people.

Sincerely,

Steve Wellcome
