Concussion expert Chris Nowinski of the Sports Legacy Institute (SLI) will speak on the treatment, prevention and subject of head injuries on Friday, May 13 in Pickard Theater.
Nowinski, author of "Head Games: Football's Concussion Crisis," is co-director of the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy at the Boston University School of Medicine and was an All-Ivy football player during his time at Harvard. Nowinski is widely regarded as a leading authority in the field of head injuries.
"I always try to get the most recent information out there to our population and also to the greater community regarding concussions and how they are treated," said Head Athletic Trainer Dan Davies. "They are treated much differently now than they were 10, and even five, years ago."
According to Davies, information about the event has been sent to all Maine high schools. Additionally, youth sports organizations such as Mid coast Youth Hockey, Central Maine Youth Hockey and the Brunswick area football league are co-sponsoring the event.
"We want this to be open to the public so people who want to know about concussions and the latest research, latest treatment, [and] latest management can get that," Davies said. "If something does come up, they feel a little bit more comfortable knowing when to go to a doctor and get the appropriate treatment right away."
The event, which is co-sponsored by the athletic department and the Maine Concussion Management Initiative, will be free of admission and open to the public. The presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m.
