To the Editors:

I enjoyed last week's excellent article by Amanda Minoff, "Wabanaki lecture celebrates Native American heritage" (November 5). Many people at Bowdoin have been working diligently over the past few years to bring more attention to Native American issues, and to attracting more Native American students to our campus. In this latter endeavor, I would like to commend the Office of Admissions—particularly Assistant Dean and Multicultural Program Manager Rhoan Garnett—for its efforts to reach out to potential Native American students. The Class of 2014 includes 11 students who self-identify as Native American (out of 30 who were admitted), which is three times the average of any previous class. The Native American Students Association (NASA) is working to keep this number growing by providing a support network and hosting Native American events that bring out the whole Bowdoin community.

Sincerely,

Leslie Shaw

Liaison for Native American Affairs
