Andy Serwer, managing editor of Fortune Magazine, is scheduled to speak at Friday's Common Hour in Kresge Auditorium. He will be discussing "Money, Markets and Mayhem."

Andy Serwer transcends the conventional notions of the business man. He carries a certain magnetism and astuteness that translates business journalism across a spectrum of media.

In his line of work, Serwer helps bridge the gap between the magazine and its image in television, publishing and the Internet. He has written one book titled "Starting Over: Why the Last Decade Was So Damn Rotten and Why the Next One Will Surely Be Better."

Named "2000 Business Journalist of the Year" by The Journalist and Financial Reporting (TFJR) Business News Reporter, Serwer is recognized among his peers as a luminary in the multimedia world. Throughout his career, Serwer has consistently inspired others to branch out into different medias.

Serwer has appeared as a business anchor on CNN's "American Morning Hour," and as a regular contributor on MSNBC, CNN and CNBC.

Serwer is a brand onto himself. Often disguised as the voice of financial reason, Serwer made a cameo in the 2009 movie "Confessions of a Shopaholic," and will be making an appearance in the upcoming movie "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps."

Director of News and Media Relations Doug Boxer-Cook shared his impressions of Serwer.

"I think he really loves what he's doing," Boxer-Cook said. "Even though his business is dealing with often complex business issues, he's able to convey the information in a very easygoing, approachable way, and with a lot of energy. I'm sure that will come through for the audience."

At Common Hour, Serwer said he hopes to endow Bowdoin students with a greater sense of optimism in the current economy and future.

"All is not lost," he said. "We can and will get out of this. And that there are great jobs and things for you to do after you graduate."
