To the Editors:

Last week's editorial supported the new printing policy, stating that it is an "important environmental move" and "we should accept the cost of this worthwhile cause." I don't. Being environmentally friendly is important, and having Bowdoin be carbon neutral by 2020 is an impressive goal that we should be proud of. I agree that reducing printing is a great way to contribute to the environmental initiatives of the College, but the bottom line is that you cannot charge for printing if the printers don't work. End of story.

The editorial board did write that it was only supportive of the new policy on the condition that printers are working, but the editors missed the central point: the printers don't work. Print jobs disappear. They show up on the printing monitor, I select "print," the job goes off the printing monitor... and sometimes nothing comes out of the printer. This is not amusing when it's a 30-page document.

I will "support the cost of this worthwhile cause" when the printers work. Until then, I do not want to be charged for printing pages that I never see.

Sincerely,
