HOG(GARD) THE BALL: Jed Hoggard ’25 sprints down the field. The men’s lacrosse team beat Williams College over the weekend 19–8 in a show of dominance against the Ephs. Earlier last week, the team also beat Colby 15–5 on Wednesday evening, continuing its success streak this season.

The men’s lacrosse team (11–1; 7–1 NESCAC) is on a hot streak after successive wins against Colby College (3–8; 0–8 NESCAC) and Williams College (5–8; 2–6 NESCAC). The Polar Bears are currently ranked second in the NESCAC as they look to the last two games of the regular season.

Last Wednesday, April 9, the Polar Bears traveled to Waterville to compete against Colby College. Midfielder AJ McBorrough ’26 reflected on the game with a positive outlook.

“We had a pretty good game plan going in, and we stuck to it. We were able to handle business.  For offense in particular, we heavily scouted for a zone. When [Colby] came out in a zone area, we were ready for them. We definitely got a lot of opportunities on offense, and we used them. Defense-wise, we focused on causing turnovers in transition, which is how we got to clear the ball successfully,” McBorrough said.

The team focused on repeating the same strategy this past Saturday when it faced Williams. Forward Alex Choi ’28 was fired up to square off against Williams going into the game, emphasizing the fact that the team lost to the Ephs on Williams soil two years ago.

The team had a strong grip at the Williams game, keeping the lead for the majority of the game. The Polar Bears cleared the middle of the field to make sure they could score.

After a 3–3 tie in the second quarter, the Polar Bears took the lead 4–2 when attacker Patrick Fitzgerald ’25 scored twice. The team ended the second quarter with a 7–5 lead, then came out blazing after half-time with an impressive run of nine straight goals.

Choi was proud of how his team built a solid momentum straight after the halftime break.

“We went into the second half with a 0–0 mindset, like it was a new game. We prioritized starting the half on the attack and not letting up,” Choi said.

The Polar Bears maintained their strong lead going into the last quarter with three more goals. Jed Hoggard ’25 recorded ten ground balls and forced two turnovers, culminating in a final score of 19–8.

“We landed some good plays.… I think it was important that we were able to juice the goals right out of halftime. I’m hoping that this puts us on a good momentum for us on Saturday,” McBorrough said.

Looking ahead to this weekend, the team is hosting its senior night on Saturday against Wesleyan University (9–3; 6–2 NESCAC). In addition to commemorating its graduating players, the team will invite Polar Bear alumni back to campus to commemorate emeritus Coach Mortimer F. LaPointe, who recently passed away. According to players, an estimated 200 alumni will return to campus this weekend to honor LaPointe and cheer on their fellow Polar Bears at the game.

Moving forward, the team is gearing up for a strong end to the regular season. The Polar Bears’  last two games are against Wesleyan and Tufts University (13–0; 8–0 NESCAC), ranked third  and first in the NESCAC, respectively.
