Highlight Reel for January 31

BROKEN RECORDS

The men’s and women’s indoor track teams competed in the New England Small College Invitational on Saturday in Boston, Mass. Two of the most notable showings from the weekend came from Kennedy Kirkland ’27 and Ian Stebbins ’25 who broke school records and won their respective events. Kirkland won the women’s long jump with a 5.86m distance, 12 centimeters farther than the previous Polar Bear record. Kirkland also competed in the 200m dash finishing in fifth with a time of 25.27 and she took tenth in the 400m with a 1:00.86. Stebbins took the top position in the pole vault, recording a height of 4.80m, breaking the College’s indoor mark in the event.

JUMPING THROUGH THE HOOPS

The women’s basketball team (18–0; 4–0 NESCAC) played Maine Maritime Academy (16–4) on Tuesday evening; the Polar Bears won 77–55.  Just five minutes into play, the Polar Bears led by almost 20 points, 22–4. In the first quarter, the team shot 85 percent from the three point zone, going into the break up 31–11. Carley Davey ’26 led the team in points, adding 14 to the board throughout the contest followed by Maria Belardi ’26 with 12 points and Melissa Leone ’27 with a career high of 11 points. The team also hit 11–12 free throws and scored 21 points off of turnovers. During a busy weekend, the team plays Hamilton College (13–5; 2–2 NESCAC) away on Friday at 7:00 p.m.

SQUASH THE COMPETITION

Both the men’s and women’s squash teams defeated Bates College on Wednesday evening with the women’s team securing its victory 6–3 and the men’s team winning  9–0. Amanda Cowhey ’25, Linley Grosman ’28, Kira Gwadry ’28 and Mira Karande ’26 all posted 3–0 wins to catapult the Polar Bears to the win on the women’s side while Jack Winston ’25, William Maschler ’28 and Luc Agudelo ’26 did the same for the men’s team. For the men’s team, the win marked the first back to back win Bowdoin has had against the Bobcats in 20 years. Both teams continue NESCAC play this weekend at Tufts University tomorrow at 1 p.m.
