BSG talks the Bowdoin Social Census, shuttle service and winter events
December 6, 2024
On Wednesday night, Bowdoin Student Government (BSG) gathered in the Mills Hall event space for its final meeting of the semester. BSG met with Senior Vice President for Inclusion and Diversity Benje Douglas to discuss the Bowdoin Social Census and ways in which it could aid the office in achieving its goals.
Douglas opened the meeting with an explanation of what the Office of Inclusion and Diversity does on campus and then moved to discuss the role and purpose of the Social Census.
“Those of us who work here know what it’s like to witness your experience, but we don’t know what it’s like to have your experiences. We don’t know what it’s like to have your experience, even those of us who might be alums, which I am not. So, we wanted to get a chance for students to tell [us] what they were experiencing in real time,” Douglas said.
Douglas then discussed events sponsored by the Office of Inclusion and Diversity. He mentioned the series of weekly lectures leading up to the recent presidential election, which aimed to bring forth and foster political dialogue on campus. Additionally, he highlighted next semester’s Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Lecture, which will be given by NPR journalist Michelle Norris and Bowdoin’s Roux Distinguished Scholar Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson.
After the discussion with Douglas, various committees gave updates on their work.
Nolan Byron ’27, chair of the Internal Student Affairs Committee, said his committee is working to provide refreshments in the library on a weekly basis.
“I know when catering puts stuff [out] during finals, people really appreciate it, but our work happens outside of finals week too,” Byron said. “So I met with Peter Bae, who’s the director of the library, before break, and he seemed to really like the idea.”
The Diversity and Inclusion Committee is working to determine what future initiatives can come as a result of the comment cards it collected from students on how they feel about diversity and inclusion at the College. The Student Activities Funding Committee sent out its new guideline amendments to all club leaders. Additionally, the Academic Affairs Committee reviewed peer institutions’ models of publicizing course syllabi before students register for classes and is working to build a survey for next semester on how to best implement such a change.
The Executive Board announced that a shuttle service similar to the one that transported students to the airport for Thanksgiving break will not be provided for winter break travel due to time constraints.
“The Thanksgiving shuttle service was a tester, so that we can replicate a more sustainable model,” BSG President Eisa Rafat ’25 said.
Lastly, BSG held votes on two funding proposals, both of which passed almost unanimously.
The Student Affairs Committee held a proposal for an event called “Cold at Coe,” taking place on February 8, which would entail food trucks, live music and hot chocolate. The event required $4,750.
The second proposal was to use $150 for a gift card raffle to incentive students to use Bowdoin Course Reviews. Those entering the raffle would be able to win either two larger $25 gift cards or ten smaller $10 cards.
