BSG approves updates to club funding and guidelines

November 22, 2024

Bowdoin Student Government (BSG) briefly met in the Mills Hall event space on Wednesday night to share committee updates and discuss Student Activities Funding Committee (SAFC) amendments regarding club funding, fundraising and donations.

The meeting began with committees sharing updates. The Facilities and Sustainability Committee has been working on increasing the number of compost bins around campus, not only in living spaces but also in commonly used campus spaces, such as Ladd House, in the future.

The Student Organizations Oversight Committee shared an update on its “How to Start a Club” event and has approved two new clubs: Folk Dance and The Brotherhood, a Black men affinity group.

Nolan Byron ’27 from the Student Affairs Committee shared tentative plans for winter sports games on campus in February.

“This coming February, we’re looking at getting some food trucks, hot chocolate, hot apple cider and dining services before a women’s basketball game and then some men’s and women’s ice hockey games,” Nolan said.

Maxwell Payne ’26, chair of the student activities funding committee, presented changes to SAFC amendments regarding event supplies, decorations, conferences and trips for clubs, specifying the new banking guidelines. Under these new guidelines, clubs are required to discuss with the SAFC before requesting funding.

The clause encourages clubs to co-host events and requires financial transparency for all new clubs. The fundraising guidelines were updated to ensure club donations are used appropriately and responsibly.

The new SAFC guidelines may provide up to $500 in funding if a club’s event will have more than 100 student attendees and can also allocate additional funding if needed.

Another update was made to supplemental board transfers for meals while traveling. Now, the SAFC will provide $4.75 per person to supplement the board transfer funding provided by Dining Services for each meal missed. Including board transfers, this brings down breakfast funding to $7.35, brings up lunch to $8.25 and raises dinner to $8.50.

The SAFC is also allocating $500 per semester for clubs that have less than 175 members and $600 for clubs with more than 175 members—down from $800, which they said no club has ever fully utilized. SAFC emphasized that the requests must be reasonably priced and must benefit the majority of the club.

BSG members concluded the meeting with a poll to vote on the proposed amendments, which passed by 18 votes in favor with two against.
