Winter visual and performing arts forecast

December 1, 2023

At the end of each semester, students in various visual and performing arts classes, ensembles and groups present their work to the campus community. This is the Orient’s guide to every event.

Dec. 1, 4:30 p.m., Studzinski Recital Hall — Prelude

The Department of Music will kick off its student recitals, from students in their first semester of lessons to advanced musicians.

Dec. 1 & Dec. 2, 7:30 p.m., Pickard Theater — Dance Concert

Leap and twirl with the Department of Theater and Dance as they present performances from three fall dance classes alongside two solo works.

Dec. 2 & Dec. 3, 3:00 p.m., The Chapel — Chamber Choir

Bowdoin’s student choral group will perform, led by Director of the Choral Ensemble Jeff Christmas. The concert will feature juxtaposed settings of Emma Lazarus’ famed poem “The New Colossus” alongside sacred pieces, a student arrangement and a guitar suite composed by Professor of Music Vin Shende.

Dec. 4, 12:00 p.m., Tillotson Room (Gibson Hall) — Lunchbreak

Music department student recitals continue—now, at lunchtime.

Dec. 4, 4:30 p.m., Studzinski Recital Hall — Beyond Borders Percussion Ensemble

This newly formed group will perform pieces with a focus on improvisation, composition and experimentation. The performance will highlight Afro-Caribbean, North Indian, South American and West African musical traditions.

Dec. 4, 7:30 p.m., Studzinski Recital Hall — Jazz Night 1

Jazz ensembles and combos will share their takes on jazz classics.

Dec. 5, 4:30 p.m., Tillotson Room (Gibson Hall) — Sampler

Student music recitals continue.

Dec. 5, 7:30 p.m., Studzinski Recital Hall — Jazz Night 2

A second and final round of jazz ensembles and combos will fill Kanbar Auditorium with melodies and rhythms.

Dec. 6, 4:30 p.m., Studzinski Recital Hall — Chamberfest

Student chamber ensembles in the music department will perform.

Dec. 7, 12:00 p.m., Studzinski Recital Hall — Mid-Day Music

Lunchbreak, rebranded. Student recitals from the music department continue.

Dec. 7, 4:30 p.m., Studzinski Recital Hall — Interlude

You guessed it! Music recitals continue.

Dec. 7, 7:00 p.m., Pickard Theater — A Cappella Concert

All six of Bowdoin’s a cappella groups will perform repertoire new and old at their winter concert.

Dec. 8, 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Edwards Center for Art and Dance — Visual Arts Department Open House

Students in the Visual Arts Department will display their work—from printmaking to painting to digitally rendered artwork—in Edwards.

Dec. 8, 7:30 p.m., Studzinski Recital Hall — Music Finale

In a final bow, student music recitals come to a close.

Dec. 9, 7:30 p.m., Studzinski Recital Hall — George Lopez on piano

The Beckwith Artist-in-Residence will play an exclusively Rachmaninoff concert featuring the Russian composer’s Piano Sonata No. 2, Op. 36 and the entirety of the Études-Tableaux, Op. 39. Lopez is also set to perform in the next installment of Music at the Museum at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art on December 14.
