Black mold found in Smith Union

January 24, 2020

A housekeeper discovered black mold in a housekeeping closet behind Jack Magee’s Pub and Grill over winter break. R.J. Enterprises, a contractor that specializes in asbestos abatement and mold removal, was brought in to perform an assessment.

“Based on the specialist’s recommendation, Facilities removed the affected sheetrock, completely cleaned out the wall cavity, repaired the wall, and repainted it with mold-resistant paint,” Scott Hood, senior vice president for communications and public affairs, wrote in an email to the Orient. “[The mold was] probably caused by condensation from the refrigerator and freezer on the other side of the wall.”

The closet will be reopened in a few days and the refrigerator and freezer issue is being addressed by Facilities.
