BOUNDING FOR REBOUNDS
The men’s basketball team (3–0; 0–0 NESCAC) faced off against the University of Maine Presque Isle (UMPI) (3–2) in its home opener, winning 65–53. Ray Cuevas ’28 added 19 of the 65 Polar Bears’ points to the board, leading the team in scoring. In the first half of the game, the team emphasized its defense over UMPI by holding the team to only 13 percent shooting and a total of nine turnovers, allowing the Polar Bears to head into the second half with a 17-point lead. In the second half, despite UMPI closing the score margin a bit, James McGowan ’25 extended the Polar Bears’ lead with a jump shot, and the team closed out the contest with a 12-point lead. The team plays Emmanuel College (0–4) tomorrow at 3 p.m. in Morell Gymnasium.
JUMPING RIGHT IN
Last weekend, the men’s and women’s swim and dive teams hosted their first meet of the season at LeRoy Greason pool against Tufts University. For the women’s team, Sydney Lillis ’27 won the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:06.57, a personal best, and also won the 100 fly with a 58.56. Sadie Smith ’25, one of the few divers on the team, won the one and three meter events with 266.91 and 263.62 points, respectively. In the women’s 200 free relay, Liv Smith ’25, Shannon McCall ’27, Natalie Garre ’28 and Ella Riccio ’25 took second place with a time of 1:41.22. On the men’s team, Rhys Edwards ’25 won the 200 fly with a 1:56.75, Jaran Depew ’27 won the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:44.87, and the team secured a first place in the 200 free relay with Micheal Mahedy ’27, Getchell Gibbons ’27, Depew and Henry Peters ’28 earning a time of 1:25.34, collectively.
BREAKING THE ICE
The men’s hockey team (1–1–0; 1–1–0 NESCAC) opened its season with split games against Middlebury College (2–0–0; 2–0–0 NESCAC) and Williams College (0–2–0; 0–2–0 NESCAC). On Friday, the team faced off against Middlebury, faltering with a final score of 5–0. The next day, the Polar Bears came back against the Ephs 2–1, with Luke Wheeler ’25 scoring both goals for the team, securing the game-winning goal with 1:42 left in overtime. The team looks forward to playing rival Colby College (1–1–0; 1–1–0 NESCAC) tomorrow at 7 p.m. in Waterville.
