Hundred foot tall pine tree falls, knocking power out in sections of campus

Heavy winds knocked over a 100 foot tree in the Bowdoin Pines, damaging a power line and leaving part of campus in the dark Thursday morning.
Most buildings on Maine Street were without power from before 9 a.m. and until after 10 a.m. Some buildings on Bath Road, College Street and South Street also lost power.
Manager of Corporate Communications for Central Maine Power (CMP) Catharine Hartnett said that 42,000 customers across the state lost power today due to heavy winds and rain.
“The midcoast area tends to be hit hard when it’s windy because it’s on the coast and there are a lot of trees,” Hartnett said.
While almost all power was restored Thursday morning, Hartnett said power in Farley Field House would remain out until Friday morning.
Interim Director of Facilities Operations and Maintenance Jeff Tuttle said that in addition to the downed trees, the wind blew open and shattered a door in the Sidney J. Watson Arena.
