Paddling its way around the country, the Reel Paddling Film Festival will make a stop at Bowdoin tonight. Self-described as showing "The Best Paddling Films of the year," the film festival lends out its films to outing clubs, stores and theaters nationwide.

Canoeing, sea kayaking and white water films from 2010 were compiled for the screening, creating a varied collection of paddling films.

According to Assistant Director of the Bowdoin Outing Club (BOC) Becca Austin '10, the films in the festival "range from funny movies, like 'Ode to Cub Boaters,' which is comical, to some that are more serious," she said. "Some are about the adventure and the journey and all that jazz, and then some are more instructional."

After Reel Paddling contacted the BOC about hosting the festival, Roger Brothers '11 jumped on board to help organize it.

According to Brothers, Reel Paddling has over 20 hours of films that can be screened as part of the festival, but due to time constraints, the BOC has previewed many of the films and selected their favorites.

"Its really great to be able to go see these outdoor films that are pretty independent and don't get that much press but they have awesome footage, gorgeous scenery and are super extreme," said Brothers.

The Reel Paddling Film Festival will start today at 3:30 p.m. in Searles 315. There will be a break for dinner and the evening will re-start at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $5 and can be found at the Smith Union information desk or at the door.
