This week in sports: Mar. 3 to Mar. 30

March 31, 2017

Jumping for joy: Brian Greenberg ’18 represented the men’s indoor track and field team at the NCAA Division III Championship on March 11. Entering the competition seeded eighth in the triple jump, Greenberg jumped 14.36 meters to earn a sixth-place finish and All-American honors, making him Bowdoin’s first male All-American in the triple jump.

Ruling the pool: Seven members of the Bowdoin swim and dive team—diver Mitchell Ryan ’19 and swimmers Sterling Dixon ’19, Marshall Lowery ’20, Linnea Patterson ’18, Mariah Rawding ’18, Karl Sarier ’19 and Sophia Walker ’17—competed at the NCAA Division III Championships in Shenandoah, Texas over break. In addition to many strong performances throughout the meet, team members earned multiple All-American honors. Lowery earned All-American Honorable Mention after her prelim time of 2:02.04 lowered her own school record and marked her as the fastest DIII freshman in the event in the country. Dixon and Sarier also earned All-American recognition in multiple events, both setting new school records in the process.

Historic firsts: At the NCAA Championships in March, Hannah Miller ’17 became the first Bowdoin nordic skier to be named an All-American after placing 10th in the 15K skate. In her second appearance at NCAAs, Miller battled harsh winds and freezing temperatures to earn a time of 40:50.5, which made her the first Division III and third east coast finisher in the event. Miller also placed 31st in the 5K classic.

Just keep winning: The men’s lacrosse team (5-2, 3-1 NESCAC) extended its win streak to five on Tuesday with a decisive 20-6 win over UMass-Boston (3-4). The streak also features hard-fought wins over fellow NESCAC competitors Middlebury (3-5, 1-3 NESCAC) and Williams (4-3, 2-2 NESCAC) that helped Bowdoin climb back into the USILA Division III poll this week at No. 18. The two matches featured particularly strong play by attackman Brett Kujala ’18, who had 10 goals and four assists between the two games to earn NESCAC Player of the Week honors.
